English Setters

Besides, comparing a field trial Britt to a field trial Setter is like comparing a wiener dog to a greyhound. I didn't mean it zeb, I just couldn't help it.... I love Britts and don't think they have been compromised near as much as setters and pointers.
My current Brittany can run with any Setter out there, yet she has proven to be an excellent pheasant dog.

You are going to get some blowback on that statement. I'm sure if we took a poll on this site that the vast majority of dog owners keep their dogs in the house. All my hunting dogs for the past 50+ years have lived in the house. In my opinion it makes for a better dog. Afterall, they are our pets and a part of our family.
They are pets first, and the bird hunting is just a bonus.

I was that way until my wife changed my mind a few years back -- Rehomed 2 males - they had always lived outside and still do -

I frankly do not miss the mess - now my wife has been wanting to get a dog inside as she reversed course -- I dont want it. I dont miss the hair or dirt. Our yard hasn't fully come in yet so maybe this summer they'll get an ankle biter that will live inside -- -- but for now the 2 Setters I have will most likely live the rest of their lives outside and the new one will as well. The smart one I can let free run -- he stays on our 60 to 70 acres mostly and loves it -- Ive had to keep him penned up in kennels since November when the grass started coming up -- he hates it - but is what it is until the grass properly comes in and he wont be tracking mud all over the outside of the house as we have a lot of concrete sidewalks and patios.

I didnt realize it was such a rarity anymore to let them stay outside.

Thumbs down exclamation

I agree, all my dogs have been part of the family and lived in the house most of the time. They do have outdoor kennels for when we are gone an extended time. I think it forms a stronger bond between hunter and dog then those that are only kennel dogs.

My dog lives in the house. But she’ll dam near run though the door to go outside. It’s our selfishness why they spend so much time inside but of course they like warm comfy secure inside. Here’s an experiment, leave the door open for a week. See what time is spent inside vs outside. I’ll wager they’ll choose more outside time than we allow them.

We have a doggy door to the backyard and mine spends a fair amount outside roaming around, but it's not a ton. He will go lay in the grass or "check the perimeter," but he always comes back inside to nap, etc.

These are my 3 setters.
1 from Michigan (high test line), ranger too big for the grouse woods Clary's dixieland setters
2. From georgia, big runner, but handles well (Erin's shamrock x tomoka sport)
3. From Wisconsin (ryman x hemlock), very close.

In the kennel during the day, house at night.

Typically hunt 30 days per year.

Beautiful dogs.

The red tipped tail color pattern is very rare! I had one for a few weeks at the end of this past season too. 😂

How does your big running dog handle warm temps, 50 degrees?

The geogria dog handles the heat very well. He has a thin coat compared to the other 2 setters from wisconsin and michigan. Typically i carry 1/2 gallon water in my vest to keep him going. Could run him off a UTV or horse. The dam is out of Erin's shamrock and sire tomkas final sport. First photo is shamrock, other photos are my dog cooper.

I hunted 27 days this year, 11 days in South dakota when temps were in the upper 50 to 60's a of number days. Carrying water is a must.

Goose, I am with you. The only time mine is outside is when we are hunting, out on the boat, or doing outdoors type things. He sleeps on the king bed with us.
I agree, I'm putting a thumbs down on keeping dogs outside, putting dogs in a dog box in the back of a truck, thumbs down on all of that.
