English Pointers

I've always hunted behind Shorthairs and I currently own two right now. My oldest is 10 and doesn't have too many seasons left in him so I've started planning ahead for when he's done hunting. I really like Shorthairs, but I've always wanted to own and English Pointer. I've been doing some looking around the past couple of weeks and just wondered if anyone had any advice or recommendations on anyone around Kansas that is breeding good quality Pointers. I spend most of my time on pheasant and I'm not interested on trialing or big running pointers. Thanks in advance.

my gut instinct tells me most English pointers love to run big, so you might end up disappointed, of course, a lot depends on the blood lines...but for me a half mile is plenty (in the cover i hunt), as i do enjoy watching my dogs work a bird to a point, instead of walking over 2 hills and finding him on point.
it is hard to beat a good GSP.

gsp go on gun dog central theres tons of them on there theres some started dogs i saw on there for 400 bucks im thinking about getting tons of choices

I own a eng pointer and wouldnt ever get a different breed. I love them. Mine stays within 30-50 yrds. He tends to work better when it is just me and him hunting. He just turned two so I figure he will do better in big groups with more experience. The only problem is since they tend to be a bit smaller, the thick and tall crp tend to be an issue. But milo, wheat, waterways and draws, they are perfect. My buddy has my dogs brother and they work great together. I'm looking to breed my male and have been searching for someone who has a female with good bloodlines to mate with. My dog is a direct decendent of Joes Little Crow and Elhew Snakefoot. Google those names and you will see what kind of stock they come from. They quality of english pointers in this area (kansas City) seems to be a little better and most of the german shorthairs. I asked a vet that owns gundogs and he said that shorthairs are getting over bred because of popularity. IMO, go for the long tail!
English pointers also make great family dogs, Buck is great with my kids and my two other mutts, but like shorthairs he needs a lot of attention and exercise.
I'll keep an eye out in this area and shoot you a pm if I can find anything
Good Luck finding your new hunting buddy!

WOW is right hunter94 you should do a little more research and not count on your gut instinct it all depends on how you train them if you want them close they will stay close if you train them that way if you want them to go forever and only stop for a point over 2 hills then train them that way

Me being a GSP guy I say don't do it. Really just had to say that to get Pointer all fired up. I do own two GSP's but have had the great fortune of hunting behind some really great EP's. For me I don't hunt my dogs too much different from the way most do with thier EP's, i.e. let them range and cover some ground. I think the breed is great although I will tell you this you being a GSP guy you may find it a little more difficult early on as they seem to be pretty stubborn or hard headed but that is to be expected from something that is hardwired like an EP. They are all buisiness and from sun up to sun down they will hunt for you because that is what they love to do. They are great dogs and I really enjoy that straight up tail crack with a good point. My opinion would be to get one of each a GSP and an EP can't go wrong there. I don't agree with shorthairs being over bred I think that there are just a lot of people out there doing these breedings with out doing thier homework and rather than help the breed they are hurting it so to speak. If you would like just send a pm and I could put you in touch with a guy that has a couple already started or as pups you choose.

Great all around dog

Maybe you might want to look into a pointing Lab I'll put mine up against any shorthair or any other dog for that matter. Their not big running dogs and their not as high strung as most pointers. The great thing about Labs is you have a great family dog the other 9 months of the year.

ok texas just for an arguement labs are not sopposed to point bit then again neither is my poodle but he does that doesnt make either of them a great all around dog just a dog with a special trait

I had a pointing lab once with the high powered blood in him worst 800.00 I ever spent but it sure was nice to see the look on that little boys face when he got the dog for free never again

You are on Tex you just name the time and the place. LOL. How is the endurance on your lab are they able to go a good bit. Seems a lot of people are going this route now days. Also does your point in the classic meaning or does it sit. A buddy wants one so he can also have a duck dog too.

You better do some reserch

Gove County you don't know pointing Labs there are lots of them. There is a American pointing lab association. It is in there blood lines just like any other pointer. My dogs lock up on birds rock solid but the best trait is they a super inteligent she just knows how to work the birds. Ask Darrin about my bitch Della he can tell you first hand what a awesome dog she is.

I agree GC most of the pointing labs I have seen don't actually point they sit or flash point or pause if you will. I just don't see how someone can say a lab is a pointing lab when it goes against all its breeding. I have some pretty good GSP's not saying they are the best but they are no slouches so I would be happy to run against a pointing lab, hell I would run em against anything if it meant it would get me home quicker from over here.:)

just to keep you going Darrin doesnt know a good bird dog from a hole in the ground anything other than his lexi ia=s a phenominal birddog although she will kill all the rabbits around gove county if you lett her

When I come to KS

OK when I come up there we will have to go out. I bet she finds birds your Britts run over. She did it last year on the opener you know with the Bus load. there was several other dogs there some GSP's a couple of setters a griffin som EP. She was finding bird that the others dogs ran over. Ask Darrin this dog is special

they point just like your GSP's

I don't know what kind of pointing Labs you guys have hunted over but if you do your home work you will find out they point just like your pointers. They don't sit down and they will hold point as long as the bird will sit still. I have had them break points on running birds but so do your pointers.

It sounds like you have yourself a nice dog Tex, one worth holding onto for sure. I am in no way trying to bash you or your dog I just have never seen a pointing lab that actually points. I would be willing to see her work though if you are in town around late December.

ok its set but not with the busload to many peaple for my taste we will have to set up a time for just the 2 of us but my britt is a field trial chamop so hold on to you knickers itll be fast first one to find 4 birds either sex
