English Pointers

Gove

I'll tell you what Gove County you know people that was on the bus last year ask them about my black bitch and what she did. She showed up every dog out there.

I don't know what kind of pointing Labs you guys have hunted over but if you do your home work you will find out they point just like your pointers. They don't sit down and they will hold point as long as the bird will sit still. I have had them break points on running birds but so do your pointers.

I am not arguing that she points what I am arguing is how a point is something that isn't taught it is something that is bred into the breed. I know it took years to breed it into all of the other pointing breeds recognized today. It just puzzles me how they are able to breed it into labs so quickly. I really think it is a thing that is being taught and that they shouldn't be called pointing labs but rather labs that don't flush because we trained them to stop on scent. As for the stance again something that can be taught not something they come with from momma. Just my .02 and maybe I am wrong so if you know otherwise please let me know I am interested in this.

ok its set but not with the busload to many peaple for my taste we will have to set up a time for just the 2 of us but my britt is a field trial chamop so hold on to you knickers itll be fast first one to find 4 birds either sex

What about one more guy with a GSP just to make things interesting. I will only run the pup too a.k.a. the Prodigy. Looser buys lunch, if nothing else we will successfully have gotten the dogs out.

No sir these dogs point naturally it wasn't taught to them. Go to the APLA (American pointing lab assoc) web page and educate yourself on pointing labs the APLA has field trials all over the country go check em out. I have had a lot of people say stuff like what your saying they just don't know what they don't know.

Thanks I will most deffinatelly check that out. I know how to admitt when I am wrong and in this case it may be safe to say I was wrong. Again I wasn't trying to argue just telling you what I knew from first hand experience. Thanks again. Seems I am always learning something new from this site.

Huntin4 fun where do you live? I would be glad to eat a free lunch. I have a pup that's in training too she's a pointing lab also. She is high octain runs like a pointer and covers a lot of ground. She can keep up with your GSP's any day. But what ever they run over my black bitch will find.

Tex I currently reside in sunny Iraq, but am stationed in KS. I will be back around mid to late December if you would like to try your luck then. I noticed you said once they run over a bird your black bitch would lock it down, see I was going to keep this fair and not pull my "ace in the hole" but if you are going to bring her I will bring my bird machine too. Just so you can educate yourself look up either Trekker, Grunbaum, Hillhavens Hustler, or Magnums King of Aces, come hungry but come with money too:)

Thanks for the input guys. It'll probably be a year or two down the road until I'm ready to purchase a dog, hopefully my Shorthair has a season or two left in him. Does anyone know anything about Prairiefire Pointers out of Pretty Prairie? They have some nice looking dogs on their website.

P.S. Spoke to my father in-law who farms in Southwest Kansas and he seems to think we're in for a pretty good year of hunting. Got the blood flowing a little talking to him on the phone tonight.

I would say if you want a EP from your state I would get a hold of someone that knows that breed and you local breeders like (Only a Pointer ) would be a good one to get ideas from. If you would like one shipped to you I know a couple breeders in the MN area. Good luck. My pointer is close working I take him grouse hunting also. There great dogs. easy to train.

That's Funny

OK I will look them up tonight. While I'm doing that you look up Shake Quake and Quiver on the net and then get back to me. I'm sure you have great dogs I have hunted over GSP's all my life and I think there probably the best bird dog there is but the thing is my labs are good in the house with the kids and I take them to work with me everyday and their great with my customers. I haven't even mentioned how great a duck dog she is. Try to find a package like that in any other breed.

You two have your little challenge and after the dust settles, me and my two shorthairs will take on the winner!:D
I moved to Kansas about 2 1/2 years ago from Utah and I will tell you that the bird and the terrain have a big influence on the type of dog I would choose to hunt with. Out west I focused mainly on chukars in the wide open desert mountains and cliffs. Pointing dogs excel in this environment! I would simply turn on the trackers, drop the tailgate and turn them loose. I would walk either the top or the bottom of the mountain and let them cover the rest, I would then wait for them to go on point, make my way to them and make the flush. It doesn't make any sense to cover all the ground the dog does when they cover that much country in a day, it would be counter productive. Out here in the mid-west when we do a big milo field drive I am at a disadvantage because of the slow pace and straight lines of the drive, this is where a shorter ranging dog such as a lab really steals the show! In the afternoon when the group breaks up, I prefer to hit large tracts of CRP and let the dogs do the work.
I have never hunted with a true pointing lab, but would like to see one in action.

Your absolutley right RuttCrazed. Big running dogs in Kansas only flush birds out of range. I can't hunt Della like you did in Utah because she is always looking to see where I'm at and she won't get to far from me. My younger big running dog I had problems with her last year, early season because she would get on scent and would chase the birds and of course they would flush out of range but I think I have her straightened out now, she's a four year old that had never been on pheasants only quail in W. Texas so it was had for her at first she learned by hunting with my older dog but if I don't knick her she would range 100-150 yards. The great thing about her is she covers 3 times the ground my old dog covers but she will run over birds from time to time and my old dog will lock-em down.

Just curious, Are the pointing labs able to keep up and cover ground all day for multiple days in a row? My English Pointer and Roosterbuck's pointer run sun up to sun down together three or four days in a row in both warmer early season weather and down right cold January weather. I love the English pointers, but if you can get a lab that works just as well for pheasant, quail, duck, geese, and goes to work with you. I say we should all stop hunting our pointers, brits, & setters and move to the new wonder dog... the pointing lab :10sign:.

Pointer Man she has never quit on me. 2 years ago we went to South Dakota for 5 days I got to say we were both in bad shape after 4 days in 60 degree weather it was the first hunt of the year for us and we were both out of shape her feet were cut up bad and she was limping real bad, she had a hard time just getting out of the kennel, she was so sore and stowed up that last day so I kept her in the kennel I didn't have the heart to hunt her anymore. She winned and cried when we left her in the truck so I turned around and went back I thought what the hell she wants to hunt so I let her out she limped her way into the field and did her thing, she was hunting on pure heart.

Thank's Pointer Man I hope you have a great season to. It sounds like it's going to be a great year out in the western part of the state. I noticed your from Overland Park I was rasied in eastern Jackson County moved to Texas 20 years ago. I miss being close to good pheasant hunting and I miss the K.C. area I still wear Chiefs stuff and follow them closely and go to a game once in a while most of my family live around there.
