E-collar required for a good dog

I have read a lot about training bird dogs as I prepare to get my first (Brittany). I am curious as to how many of you feel that you need an e-collar in order for your dog to perform well.

It's not a must, but it sure makes it easier! Plus you're not the bad guy when it comes to correcting behavior problems. Its also one hell of a long leash.:thumbsup:
 
Totally depends on the dog, and probably where you hunt. Many times it is not necessary. I don't really require one for either of the 2 dogs I have now. But these are both close working flushing dogs. I can see the GPS capability being helpful on wide ranging pointers. I may use the collars I have occasionally on one of my dogs, not so much for normal control, but to have in an emergency. Around roads for instance.
 
if you aren't familiar with their proper use you can really really really screw up a dog, I would suggest you try training without one for your first dog.

You do not need an e-collar in order for your dog to perform well. That's what training is all about. With a properly trained dog an e-collar probably would not be needed. BUT, it seems most dogs will test you in the field on occasion and the e-collar is a very effective way to correct that behavior. Even if you never need to correct your dog I look at my e-collar as an insurance policy. If needed I can stop my dog from crossing roads, running in front of vehicles, etc. when the dog can't hear my voice or whistle commands.

Just remember, an e-collar is not used to train your dog. Only to re-enforce what the dog already knows.

Definitely not needed... But that's for the dogs who u can control by voice or hand signals etc. Like mentioned prior after your dog understand what you are out there doing hunting that is u may never need to use the e collar...

I broke my e collar & used a crappy back up it would turn off I did not realize this my dog hunted fine just like it was working... I've hunted her with no collar also she act a lil different I do use a dummy collar now just so she thinks I have the e collar on her my dog is a close worker unless we in prairie type terrain...

Once the dog realize u can reach out & touch him they listen & act great 1st few hunts of season they may test ya...

But I say u can teach a dog a thing or 2 with e collar basically if they chase rabbit cat car etc. U can make that a bad experience & something they never wanna do again... My dog just has to be told no fur or no rabbit etc & she leave em be same with coons

I agree u don't light up a dog trying to teach it something ...

PLEASE -PLEASE--Of all the advice you get here ---take the last sentance of what George said as gospel---
YOU ONLY USE A COLLAR TO ENFORCE WHAT THE DOG HAS ALREADY BEEN TRAINED ONE--:cheers:

That is more along the lines of what I was thinking
 
e collars are a tool in your tool belt. They don't teach, only reinforce. If this is your first dog you will probably spend lots of time training and bonding with that pup. You will feel you don't need a collar, they always retrieve and they always listen to my commands. Then you will hit a problem. It is different for every dog. It night be they drop the retrieve on the way back to you. It might be they no longer listen to you "here" or "come" command. It might be they start to chew on the birds or dummy. Somewhere along the way they will reach an age where they will test you, your training skills, and whether or not they need to obey on the first command or the 5th. That is where an e collar can help. They know they command but need reinforcement. That is where your skills as a trainer will be tested. Anger does not help the dog out, but we all, at least I do get angry and frustrated at the dog. Those sessions usually go south pretty quickly.Find a good trusted trainer and learn from them, they all have different ideas but most of the good ones will help you succeed.
