Drinks for dogs in frigid weather

We're going to SD in 10 days and the weather is turning really nasty. Lows near -20 towards the end of next week. I'm sure we'll be road hunting if it's anywhere near that cold. Anyway I remember reading a while back that a guy gave his dogs warm chicken noodle soup while in the field on really cold days. Anybody here tried that? Any other ideas?

Thanks

soup is a very bad idea. the very best thing in the world for a dog is good ol american water. room temperature is best. dogs need even more of it when its very cold and they are working....make sure you have plenty on hand. Some dogs are better at drinking while afield than others....ones that dont ..you should mix in a little water with their dry food at days end when you feed them..this will help make sure they are hydrated.

A trick that some of the field trialers I'm around use to get their dogs to drink and hydrate is to add a little milk to the water. Apparently it gives the water enough flavor to entice the dog to drink.

Cold weather out here can also mean very dry weather so be sure to keep fresh water available for your dogs at all times.

The chicken soup idea doesn't sound like a good idea. A lot of sodium in it.

Of course I have plenty of water guys. Five gallon jug is always full. The soup thing is just something I read a while ago and has sat at the back of my brain. Thought I'd throw it out there and see what people thought. Hard to keep water at room temp when I'll be hunting with air temps below zero.

Water

I use soup at night to get my dog to eat after a long day of hunting, but not out in the field. I had a friend give me some hydration tablets for the water but my dog wouldn't drink it. She seems to like just plain water no matter how cold it is.

I bought a couple quart thermos bottles and keep those in the truck with lukewarm water. They will stay in frozen all day.
