Dove destinations

NC KS'ish

Less than 1hr , primarily N of Salina is where you might find me the evening of September 1 and the morning of September 2. I'll be the guy in the white F-150 loaded w/ little gray birds. If the tailgait is up, I'll be the one w/ the HUGE smile on my face, wearing all camo w/ 2 enthusiastic young men. We'll be near some sunflower fields for awhile, then spend some time near the water so the hound can swim.
Side note: We're planning to stop by Saline SFL and see what's left over from the salvage order that begins August 27th. If the place has been pilferred (sp?) or the fish all have worms, it's sure to be an experience either way. A quick stop by Rock City so the kids can play and we'll be headed home Friday evening. With any luck, dinner Friday night will be constructed around some jalepeno-stuffed, bacon-wrapped dove birds. I'll do my best to get pics of something besides dead birds. With any luck I'll get some pics of broods on the sides of the road, though I know those will be few and far between on this scouting trip:(

So, where are you headed? Yes, we want GPS coordinates and arial pics if ya got 'em.

Hey Kbritt,
I envy you; I can't seem to find a field of dreams here in the NC mountains this year; too much development in the farming valley has land owners under pressure from neighbors.
Hope that you and the boys have a great time! The jalepeno stuffed bacon wrapped breasts are a favorite around this home stead too:10sign: We do it with our pheasant on the grill too; slice into the meat and stuff a few into it, wrap with bacon and toss ont he grill, tastes great!
Cheeres!

Will likely be at one of two conservation areas here in Missouri, one just east of Pittsburg, KS, or one 30 miles further east yet. Have had real good luck on these lands in the past. Also going to look at a property the state of Kansas has down around Baxter Springs, Kansas, I think they do some farming for dove hunting on it, just depends on where I see the birds in the days leading up to the season. Need to talk to my neighbor, coming into work this morning there were power lines covered in doves on top of his combined corn field.

I understand your anger. How about not being able to hunt your grandparents farm that you grew up and worked on your entire childhood, for the same reason. Very tempted to tell him to use his lease money the next time he needed an outlet wired in his basement or a repair done to his truck.....better stop now, before I'm threatened by a lawsuit like the outfitter did the last time I opened up on a hunting forum.....

I am going to do a little dove hunting down here in the OKC area, then up just north of Pratt the 4th and 5th. I might be a little late for the opening in Kansas, but have several good fields to choose from. Everyone have a good opening season on doves (seems to be a bunch around down here) then I have to wait another 2 months for the REAL season..

Rod you are right about the Real Season, but the next best thing opens on Sept 15, Early Prairied Chicken season

I musta missed thissin' dangit!

PLEASE go hunting w/ me sometime and tell me this story over a cold:cheers: Yes, after the hunt for all you trolls out there:D

I think a guy could sit anywhere in NW KS and shoot a limit of doves. My son and I always have a goal to shoot our limit in less than 30 minutes. We have done it several times.

It's unfortunate to hear of the situation in your area. There are plenty of houses for sale in KS;)

We will have a great time and I should get some pics. The 9yo is looking forward to some time catching critters, while the 6yo keeps insisting he's "big enough to use the gun safely." He was telling me yesterday at Cabela's that I "should get a new boat." I told him I wasn't quite ready for a new boat and asked why he thought I needed one. He said, "I was thinking you would like a boat dad. Can I get a camo 4X4, 4-wheeler and a GUAGE?" I told him his 4-10 was a "guage" and he said, "no, like a 12 or 20." I don't think the lil' turd can even reach the trigger on the "Guage" so I'm thinking he'll have to wait another year. I don't plan on talking him out of taking his first shot at a dove bird w/ the 4-10 though:thumbsup:

Different forum I go to, but some people don't like the truth I guess, gets in their way of fleecing unsuspecting people out of their money maybe?

Hold me to a hunt this year. Junior will be a year old, so I should be able to get at least a few weekends off, if I can stay away from work. This weekend makes the 5th out of the last 6 I've been here. Your plant need an engineer or broom pusher?

Fortunately, we got that situation straightened out at the plant where I work. Seems I've been getting a more reasonable shake in terms of days off. More good news for ya; I'm the guy that makes the hirin' decisions for engineers. We call them supervisors/managers though and you'd be the only one w/ a real engineerin' degree. The supervisors got it made when it comes to time off, but you're worth more than the position pays. That being said, I was ready to take a drastic cut in pay to get some days off:mad:

No doubt we should make this the season we get in the field together.

Doves

I am not sure if I can talk myself into driving four hours to hunt doves, but I saw a ton of them during my drive out to Fort Carson Colorado this week. Once I got West of Smith Center they were everywhere. It should be a great opener. I will most likley hunt a little closer to home between Leavenworth and Nemaha County.

High Plains Dove

I will be sitting in camo by a windmill overflow pond on the High Plains of western Kansas with my huntin' buddy. Later the breast halves will be prepped with a slice of fresh apple, wrapped in a half slice of smoked bacon, and cooked to a turn over mesquite-laced charcoal. Fine eating.

I'd like to go further west too, but I'm pretty sure I can shoot 15 birds w/o driving that far. I wouldn't want to dip into my pheasant funds just to limit out on doves in half the time.

Good luck to ya!

Man, would l like to be back in the old stomping grounds at Frontenac and shoot a few dove and eat at Chicken Annie's.

Watchout for rattlers out here. They are everywhere. I see a couple every evening driving the roads.

It has been so dry here that even the rattlesnakes have been holed up, but yesterday morning was cool and overcast. Told my hired man that it could be a day for snakes. Sure enough a big bull snake by the ranch headquarters and my hired man saw a big bull snake when he went to town to pick up some diesel for the irrigation engine. I met him at the engine as he was just putting the last few gallons in the tank, so I went around and walked up the engine and just as I was ready to turn the key, he hollers, "Rattlesnake". Man my feet went in the air and I was hi stepping it out of there. My hearing is such that I never hear a rattlesnake. He says, "I can hear it, but I can't see it." About that time it stretches out and it had been laying under the engine by some electrical conduit. Needless to say I am thankful for his hearing and his being there. Praise the Lord.

Saw several snakes dead on the road yesterday and this morning, mostly rattlesnakes. Be careful guys.
