Do I need to seal new waterproof hunting boots?

I just bought a pair of Irish Setter Havoc's leather/gore-tex. They claim to be water proof but should I put a coat or two of sealant on them before using them in the field? If so, what product and what's the process?

Adding any waterproofing to the boot, may void the warranty...if there is a warranty.

If in doubt, contact the factory (Red Wing, MN) .

In time, as the boot wears, it will probably leak. Then I would recommend a waterproofing material be applied.

I have the Upland Havocs also. Had them for a couple of years. No need to treat them right away but no harm in doing to. I like to treat mine a couple times a year just to help preserve the leather. I checked with Irish Setter and they recommended the Red Wing Shoes "Mink Oil Paste" so that's what I've been using. If you go to the Upland Havocs on their web site and click on Care Options it talks about various products. Or they have Online Chat and you could ask them. Good luck with the Havocs. I really like mine as they are very comfortable. Not the most waterproof but then I have never found any boot with a waterproof membrane to be very waterproof regardless of brand.

I wear an old pair of Red Wing Uplands (Gore-Tex). After each season, I actually go to a car wash to wash my truck and my boots. High pressure rinse then let them dry completely. Then mink oil them and put them up. Never had a wet foot.

Before you put anything on boots that contain a waterproof membrane like Gore-Tex, Ultra Dry, etc. make sure that the product is approved for use on those boots.
