Deer Hunter Survey

I think venison is delicious. My family and I always run out of it by Spring. Assuming it is legal, i would gladly take one of your corn-fed does next season.:D leaving such delicious and healthy food for the coyotes seems like a real shame.

I have never left a deer lay YET. If we can't get them thinned out any other way I may someday. I have turned pretty much anybody loose to shoot them that ask (does only except family) the last two years and we have shot a bunch of does. We will give this a couple years and see how it goes. I am going to go drive around the farm this evening, and I can almost guarantee I will see at least 50 deer maybe up to 100 depending on how they are moving. Our buck doe ratio is way out of wack. I would guess 4 or 5 does to every buck. This is due to all the hunters shooting bucks and turning their nose up at harvesting does.

fsentkilr,
If you need weeding out a few does next season, keep me in mind. I like to stock the freezer and two does would do it just fine.

My daughter loves to tag along with me but is young enough that she gets bored if we aren't seeing anything. Unfortunately I wasn't successful when I let her tag along this year. If There is an opportunity for a tag-along hunt in an area with lots of deer next season... Well, I would be one happy dad.:D

Been watching this board for several months, here's my first post.

I went looking for the survey because I have some opinions, but it seems they are trying to conduct a more scientific survey and only want answers from the folks who received cards. Oh well.

Don't care much about crossbows.

I think the rifle season is plenty long enough, and the anterless season too. Consider me a "no" to a Thanksgiving or Christmas season. BTW, I like the long anterless season because it allows me to choose when to go. Weather's always a concern at that time of year, and kids activities can also interfere.

All in all, I like it the way it is. I would support "earn-a-buck" in certain units, and I would support no-additional-fee doe tags for certain units (unit restriction on the doe portion of the tag).

I would also support use of dogs for recovery. This year I missed or lost my first deer since my teens (a doe in the anterless season). After about 3-4 hours searching without any physical evidence of a hit, I don't know what to say. The deer certainly reacted as if hit, but I found no hair, no blood, and certainly no deer. If my bird dog had been with me that day, I would have gotten out the shotgun and went "quail hunting".

Welcome to the board, Matto, and excellent first post. I think KDWP has certain surveys that they allow input from all, but this must have been one that only went out to a certain number of people who purchased tags.

One thing I think KDWP has done really well in recent years is to make the system much less complicated for the average hunter. Currently, if I want a whitetail buck and doe, I can buy two tags anywhere and hunt them anywhere in the state during any season that it is legal. I am glad I don't have to choose a unit at the time of purchase, or buy separate tags for archery and rifle.

If I want to shoot the maximum number of deer possible, then it gets a bit more complicated about where and how I can do it... More does can be shot in certain units, and some places have special seasons, after the second doe I think you have to hunt private land only, etc,... But still, for the average hunter they kept it really simple.

Like any game, more rules makes it less fun and more work. I hope they keep that in mind when they review the proposed changes.

Those of you that are shooting does and letting them lie, why isn't this a consideration? (obviously a Kansas group)

Seems like a lot of good can be had with this program, and if you click on "lockers" seems like there are a lot of lockers around.

Now, I know it's probably a pain in the ass to go find the deer, and gut it and drag it to your truck, and then drive it to a locker, as opposed to just popping one and letting it run off and die, but... This seems like a lot of good could be done.

I wonder if the fuel expense would be tax-deductible...

Perhaps one of us NR's (non-residents) could help. Ever considered issueing doe tags to us NR's at a reasonable price? You can keep your trophy bucks. I'd love to come out there on my yearly, week long trip for Phez and quail and kill a doe or two while i'm there. Can't do it with the outrageous prices for tags for us NR's.

Give us doe tags at $10-$30 and I'd gladly help thin the herd.

Great idea! Offer a limited number of doe tags to out of state hunters at a reasonable price.

Lots of people would rather shoot a nice fat doe for the table than a buck any day.

I would be all for that to as long as they raised the price of NR tags to kill a buck and have a draw system. Just raise the general nr tag to $500 and throw in a doe tag.

I am sure the NR's are getting it stuck to them worse than the residents. Give me a break.

Why a limited amount. Just give us a decent price on doe tags and keep the buck's to residents.

I'm, not going to pay $500 for a buck tag even if they throw in a doe tag.

Give me a doe tag that i can afford and I'll help thin the herd.

Well originally I thought that maybe an unlimited amount would kill off too many does. But, on second thought I doubt that there would be enough OOS hunters buying doe tags to hurt anything.

I think most guys want to come to KS to shoot a buck because for some reason they think every KS buck is big.

I say charge them $100 dollars a tag and have at it.

Why not give the landowners doe tags to do with as they wish? If I want to give them to somebody to fill so be it. They will give me damage control tags to shoot and leave the deer lay if I want, so why not let me allow anyone to fill them and use the deer?

How was it a big failure? I guess I never knew they tried it in the past. I guess they would rather pass out damage tags to farmers to shoot and leave lay.

I don't know about landowner doe tags, but the landowner buck tags used to be a hot item. Landowners could get them cheap and sell them to OOSers for a big profit. I know of one who used to make a couple thousand buying and selling the tags, and didn't even allow them access to his land. He was basically just a middle-man for OOSers to get Kansas buck tags.

I'm sure lots of farmers made extra money when they sold tags that way.

I'm aware of the landowner buck tags. I never did like that idea. Thats different than allowing a landowner to give away doe tags if he has crop damage.

transferable tags. They were unit specific back when we had to choose 2 units. Landowners sold them on ebay, AT, etc for big profits but most were not used in the units specified. We fought hard to get rid of them and finally did. Outfitters got ahold of them and it was a circus. They were really meant for family members and not an auction.
