dandeloin wars

It's that time of year lawns:( And yesterday I fought the yellow flower god I hate that damn flower:D Got my lawn sprayer out and hooked it up to the very old mower. which worked the last time I used it:D Well this year carb was gummed up:mad: Most of the day nothing. so I decided to make a hitch for the zero turn mower. And out I go. Everything was going awesome when all the sudden the boom falls off:mad: fixed that. Then the sprayer came unhooked. By now I was really mad at the dandelion. So I add more 2-4D to the sprayer to make sure I got them. By the looks of thing I got them. What kind of lawn work you guys enjoy?

I like the kind of lawn work where I sit in the shade with a drink and point out to my son or SIL the spot they missed

We've been at war with dandelions for a couple weeks now here in southern Wi.

I like sitting on a zero turn and mowing weed free fields of healthy grass at 10 mph or so.

I have an itty bitty midtown yard. Last summer I planted 800 sq. ft. of the back yard in buffalo.:D I went to spray the crabgrass last week....1/3 of an ounce of wettable powder:eek: Most of the time I'll go ahead and ride it.

do like playing in the garden, weeding, watering....

coot im sure you killed them I switched the labels. you used roundup:D no im not even that cruel. one year my charming wife helped me with lawn work. she sprayed the dandylions with a spot sprayer:eek::eek: I asked which bottle!!!!!!! she said DONT worry im a big girl and know what im doing. she grabbed it and said see, it is weed and grass killer. im real good at reseeding the lawn now.

I like working on my koi pond. it is very relaxing. wife said I could enlarge it last year:cheers: she $$%$^ a brick when she saw me on capt coots skid loader digging a huge hole!!!! pond holds about 3700 gallons.about 4 foot deep at the deep end. lighted waterfall even has a bottom drain filter system. did not loose a single fish last winter. they stay in pond all year. cant afford lake front property so I built my own lake:cheers:

Absolutely the worst time to try to kill them is now, when they are growing out of the ground.

You will be amazed next year, if you wait till October (after first frost) and hit the entire yard with 2-4-D. Thats the time to kill next years problem.. Guaranteed.

Redog you are right !!! Banvel works even better, mow lawn at least 3 1/2 in. 4" is even better. I really enjoy taking care of lawn-- flowers are not for me to care for, just look at !!!! Had to spray fungicide on my sports fescue grass, blight was working on leaves.

Why wasn't I notified of this:D Well looks like I got a new war with them this fall. Thanks for the advice reddog. I learn something everyday:thumbsup:

If you do this Coot, I can guarantee youll be thanking me one year from now..

took me 40 years to figure it out, but Ive been almost dandylion free since then. The only place you will have them, is where you missed them with the fall application.

The hardest part, is attacking them when theyre not bothersome/blooming.

There are so many other things to do that time of the year, but if you make this a priority to get it done, the results are amazing.

You got a lot of water hose. get one of them jug spray things that go on an end of a hose. I did that last year worked ok but couldn't reach it all.

Cows are eating mine, The old pastures are yellow with the things.
They will be gone in a week or two and the grass will take over.
We're just getting Spring up here.

People too:D The green leafy portion of dandelions are good eating:thumbsup: unless they've been sprayed with poison:eek: Then they're no good. lol

perhaps they are a little unsightly, get chickens, it make there yolks bright yellow! Fresh chickens are better, eggs are surely better. No spray. Otherwise housing subdivision members, with homes associations, MOVE! Get to the country, and commute, tell the home association to stick it! You be real happy. I am, I look out at chicken tractor, yellow " row crop", it looks better than a roundup sprayed field down the road, and no "homes association dues. Wife will get used to it, watch re-runs of " Green Acres"!!!!!

That's my plan. At least I'm working on it--- if I can only get my wife to take the bait:rolleyes:. She's a "neighborhood" type and I'm the farm guy. As the saying goes, opposites attract. My old man wants to get back onto the farm too but has the same issue. Persistence I'm hoping will pay off for the both of us.:)

Whew! I'm glad there is somebody else who doesn't mind the dandelions. I don't mind them at all, and my kids think they're way better than boring old grass!

I don't know that our chickens eat dandelions more or less than anything else in the yard. They seem to pretty much graze on whatever plant or bug they come across. But I will agree that their yolks are much brighter than store eggs.

O&N, we only use our tractor for the young birds until they get close to full size. We keep our flock in a coop/pen and free range them in the afternoons. We have not lost a single hen since we started keeping them penned up until noon. They seem to all gather back up well before sunset and go back into the coop before the predators get active in the evening. When we free-ranged them all day they would always go into the woods at sunrise and get eaten...

Dandelions

We spray Banvel on our golf driving range. It's 2-4d with a little dicamba. Works pretty good. If you really want to clean things up, try T-Zone. It's got more dicamba, 2-4d, mcpp, and one other chemical that I can't remember. It will smoke clover, and about every other kind of weed you have. Spray in the fall. Good luck.

the only flower i can't kill

Dandies are the only flower i can't kill! Through the years my wife has tried to plant all sorts of bulbs and plants. But sadly ( for her ) none of them are mower or weed eater proof:rolleyes:. I don't have a green thumb but i do have a green riding mower (john deere).
