I was sitting here at my puter desk for some guy to on one of these threads to send out a picture of sumpen he made so I started figuring out how much money I need to bring with me. My wife walked in and saw what I was doing and she asked me how much each pheasant cost me. She said there is the cost of a license, gas there and back,611 miles each way, gas there, lodging, meals, shells, than she wanted to know what else is there and being kinda smarter tahn completely stupid I told her that was it.
Well she seen my calculator there and she started drilling me. Cost of license, I told her I already had one and it was paid for, online today, gas, well the diesel gets about 30 mpg, well that is what I told her. How many miles aroung trip. I told her 1200 miles, how much for diesel, well honey the service stations there are so glad to see non residents come they give us a break plus I get a militaty discount so it comes to about $2.22 a galoon. He hit those keys on th calculator and came up with $88.80 for that. She said that is not to bad. I told her about $20.00 a day for gas there but that is divided by 4 guys or $5.00 a day for 5 days. so now it is $108.80, I was really impressed on how fast she can use that calculator, but 30 years in retail helps. Than she asked about food, well honey we are taking turns fixing meals, I am making beef stew for 7 guys and it shouldnt cost over $20. , now $128.80. Lodging is $180. a night by 6nights is $1080 divided by 8 is $135. She said that is $262.00 now, what else, well honey maybe $25.00 for drinks. $287.00 she said. I said sweet heart that is everything. Now how many birds can you harvest, I told her 15 total. The fingers were going like a singer sewing machine refiguring, she said Jim that is 19.13 a bird, you know Jim that is not as bad as I thought. So you will only need about $350.00 RIGHT

what could I say.

Good thing I have been putting some aside, gotta go her she comes
 
LMAO, thats too funny! I can't lie though my wife asked me the same thing, now I save my "allowance" to pay for my trips ;) lol
 
Its not the money I am worried about. Its the "Honey, remember how often you went pheasant hunting, well ......"
 
Fortunately, that hasn't come up at my house yet.

When it does, I'll at least point out that I eat and drink dailly, so those numbers don't count toward hunting expenses.

Also, think of the off-setting savings on the therapy that you'd need if you couldn't go hunting?

And, if that all fails, I'll point out that it's really not for me, it's all for the family dog :)

My costs are just a tad more per bird :rolleyes: but i live farther away :eek: Closer to $75 per bird but who is counting :eek: Opps here comes the wife...........:cool:

Saw a tip for getting ready for travel it went like this....Lay out all your clothes and all your $$$...Then take half as many clothes and twice as much $$$ seems about right.

I know one thing I am repacking my clothes and putting in more, I went Sporting Clays shooting with a friend today and when we were on station 1 it started drizzling, by station 4 we were soaked, we shot 5 stations then we were off to the club house. I thought I was gonna freeze to death, when we left the Springs, (Colorado ) it did not look like rain therefore no warm jacket no rain gear. I aint gonna get cold like that in S.D. I am loading up another duffel bag with my woolies.
And double the money, I lik to never got what I have so I am SOL :(
 
You could tell her how much does it cost to go to Mental Health doctor. Your mental health gets a big boost from a trip like you are going on.........Bob

You make a really valid point here. The cost of hospitilization of any kind is sky rocketing. To stay healthy and sane a man must have a certain number of days out in the field. Your allotment of designated "days a field" should be negotiable!

I wrote a newspaper artcile on this Mental Health deal many years ago. It is in the Lounge sub-forum-Stories. It is called it WHY. I think that explains a lot........Bob
 
My brother and I made a three day hunt in Kansas last january for about $300

I hate to remind anyone of this but my buddies and I Figured out deer hunting over a five year period and add in guns bows boots camo and tree stands.(license gas etc...) We divide all that by the number of deer we had shot over that five year period we came up with Something like $150 per deer. If you really want to get technical theres the price of land if you own land plus tax on that land or your payment to a farmer.

Generally with the women folk I keep the ''Don't ask don't tell'' policy in play.:D Or I try to change the subject and tell them how pretty they are.

the best way to handle the wives and money is on a need to know basis and so far she don't need to know she did however find the bill for the reciever tube dogbox and had a small heart murmur she is over it now though
 
it is if you think about it it cost up to 400 an hour for a shrink and for a pheasant hunt you can spend 400 dollars for a couple days if you team up with someone to help cover costs
 
Way back when non toxic came about I pretty much quit waterfowling. Years later the youngest went off to college-came home telling me how much fun duckhuntin was with his buddies. "We gotta go, Dad" he said.

Well I needed a 12 bore that was steelshot capable, needed steel shot, shadowgrass camo, waders, hip boots, duck calls/lanyard, Man we gotta have a dog! Chessie pup, pro trainer to start us off right, vet bills, dog food, vet bills, shots, dog food, Got to have one of them mudmotor go-devil boats with a longtail motor for the mud flats and stumps, pirouge for quiet floating down the sloughs, boot dryers cause I fall a lot in deep water, vet bills ,dog food, that ol truck just don't have the umph is used to when pulling even a light boat, let's see; seems there must of been at least one more thing.
Oh yeah, duck stamps- state and federal and did I say dog food?

Anyway we finally went duck huntin.......Had a good morning and I knocked down 2 woodies and a fat greenhead. Came home, dressed them out and got to thinking about cost. Added up all my bills ( I'm a stickler for receipts) weighed the duck meat out and divided. $1,892.16 per ounce!

Awwww, to heck with the cost....Ain't it fun!:)

Well, I have no problem with my wife. She loves to hunt birds as much as me..well almost. She never has a problem with me buying a gun or other hunting items.

We tend to do quit well and get many, many meals of game that lasts most the winter and no we don't go over our possession limit but hunt as many species as possible. We do not pay to hunt. We have been and always will be freelance hunters.

I also don't include the cost of any of my guns. Guns are a investment IMO, if you buy the right kind , at the right price.

I always kid the wife. I tell her when I die, you are going to have one of the best auctions to ever hit the sportsman in the area. I wish I could be there to see it. She Tell's me she's not selling my stuff.

I just got back from the PHU opener in Nebraska. On the way home, I called home to give the family an ETA and was told by the wife, "We've got a busy day tomorrow, the new dishwasher is being delivered in the morning". Everytime I go on a trip, something new, big and expensive is getting delivered. These trips sure do get expensive!
