Cooking Own Meals at the Motel

This week my spousal unit and I started experimenting with the crockpot to see what’s cheap, easy and will hit the spot for hearty meals after cold windy days.

I depart for SD in ten weeks and plan to fine tune the menu between now and then
 
You can throw chicken thighs, a can of chicken broth, celery, carrots, onion, stuff like that and just put it on low and just let it cook all day while you're hunting. You're hunting come back and and you just eat it with bread and butter and it's pretty dang good.

We were just talking about Filipino chicken last night. I wonder how it would taste with pheasant. Probably have to add a few chicken thighs for the fat.
 
One of my favorite crock pot meals is pork and sauerkraut. I made it last week with a tenderloin I had in the freezer. I prefer it over mashed potatoes but sometimes I'll throw potatoes in with it and make it a one pot meal.
 
Reading this thread makes me appreciate how lucky I am that I often hunt with an older fella that is a gourmet cook and loves to make breakfast and dinner. He plans the meals and cooks them and the rest of us clean up.
 
When I had less money we would cook at the motel. Crock pot usually. Now I would only do that if there was no place to eat within 20 miles.
 
This year we tried pheasant, sausage and shrimp jambalaya..

first, we cook the fresh pheasant breasts in bacon grease....

then the sausage...

Then the peppers and onions.....

then it all goes back in....

then in goes the chicken broth and zatarains jambalaya mix...bring it to a boil, then simmer for 25 mins or so.

with about 5 mins left, drop in the prawns....

hearty meal to top off a long day in the snowed over fields of South Dakota!

I did pheasant Jambalaya a couple weeks ago, pretty much the same way and man, it was delicious! Thanks for adding the pics, I always like seeing pics of food. I've been on a cajun kick lately, did pheasant sauce piquant last week, also very good. Look up chicken sauce piquant and just substitute pheasant.
 
Use to cook alot in motel room. Some because of being young and finances for are group and some because of needing good home cooked meals to fuel us and our cattail walks. Crock pots and electric skillets were my tools. That was many years ago. Finances are better now but still use a grill for burgers and steaks once in awhile still. Occasionally, even a Crock pot beef roast for the memories. All is good, eating out or cooking at the motel. End results is what matters, still hunting cock birds after 30 years. Semper FI 👍
