Cold Weather

it's called Musher's Secret. I have some, good protectant for pads during the winter.

I have used this in the past with mixed results. It does help a little with snow balling in the feet but you must keep re-applying it. I've also tried Vasoline but that didn't do much either. With some longer haired dogs it's just a problem. Boots are the other answer if you can keep them on.

My older Brittany has a terrible time with snowballs in her paws. Constantly stopping to bite them out. My younger Britt has a short, flat coat and "tight feet". She never has any snowballs in her paws. Before I bought her as a pup the breeder explained to me that he bred dogs for "tight feet" and that snowballing in the paws would not me an issue. He was right on.

This (snowballs in feet) is a big problem with my goldens. It helps tremendously to take a scissors and cut out as much loose hair as you can between their pads. Cut the hair as short as you can. It is that hair that the snow wraps around.

Trust me, it will make a big difference.

South Dakota Report 12/12/13

Second trip to S.D this year. generally go out after deer season closes since I have better land access. Got our limit every day for three guys, but it was cold, Thursday was 5 degrees for a high with 20 mph sustained winds!!! Birds were way down, fortunately good shooting, dumb luck and great dog work paid off!! Great story to share, that we can all relate to: saw some birds in a shelter belt that we can hunt, thinking there were approx. 5-6 birds in this thing, walked in, caught me off guard when the place blew-up and 25-35 roosters flushed. Did get a few but should have done much better for all the birds that flew out!!! oh well, get them next time!!
