Cold Weather

Anyone planning to hunt out here in SD the end of this week and into next best be prepared for some mighty cold weather. Especially in the Aberdeen area where the highs for the next 6 days will range from 8 to -1 and the lows from -8 to -24. That's without any wind chill factor. Quite windy around the state today. And we are getting snow with much of the state getting 5-6 inches before tomorrow.

Think I'll take the next week off and let the dog heal up from some cuts and hot spots. Probably won't hurt to give this ol' body some rest also. :)

I don't know how you guys do it, you are a lot tougher than I am

how long does the season last? do you ever get a week of warmer weather in late December?

The season in SD goes through January 5th. Warmer weather? Depends on what your definition of "Warmer" is. The average highs for the remainder of December are in the low to mid 20's and the average low is around 5 degrees. If we are lucky we will see some days in the 30's. That's warm for us this time of year. The weather for the next week is certainly colder than normal.

I just finished blowing about 3" of white stuff off my driveway and it's still snowing.

WE are getting dumped on, heavy snow and soon the wind and bitter cold temps.
And I don't know why I'm up here?

I'll be heading to Arizona in about 30 days!

Should be some pretty good hunting after the weather clears out. Coming back out just after christmas for the last week. Just returned from SD hunted the whole week of Thanksgiving with the family. The hunting was exceptional with little to no pressure. Can't wait for the end of the month.....

Just hope we don't get too much of the white stuff. Last year my season ended early because the snow depth made it impossible to get into the fields.

I see you list Tripp, SD as a location. I have a daughter that lives in Tripp.

Our group is going to make a go of it and come out tomorrow morning to the Aberdeen area. We plan to bundle up and take lots of breaks in the vehicles, but I'm hoping with the fresh snow and then the cold that the birds will be holding tight. I'm anticipating some pretty good action. Does anyone know if that area got a lot of ice? Or is it mainly just snow?

Dakotazeb,

I actually live in Northern Wisconsin. I have been coming out to SD for the last 21 years to hunt pheasants. The wife and I fell in love with SD & pheasant hunting, we broke down and bought our own place out there. We are now SD taxpayers...

Biggest thing for us- we don't have to worry about booking the farm house we rented, or where the dogs would stay. We can come and go as we please now. No worries other than where will we go next to hunt.

Cool. Where are you in Northern Wisconsin? We'll have to try and meet up for a hunt in SD some day.

WallyG, I talked to a friend in Aberdeen this morning and they had 3" on the ground and still snowing. I think they are suppose to get around 6" and the wind is suppose to blow 30+ mph today but diminish this evening.

You are right, could be some good hunting if you can handle the cold. As I've gotten older my tolerances for both heat and cold have gotten less. Think I'll stay in the house until it warms up a little. :)

We're heading to the Eureka area to hunt next Thurs, Fri and Sat. Been keeping an eye on those temps. Going to be very cold here in MN too. Been hunting late season for many years and work outside for a living so I should be fine. I do have a friend flying up from Memphis though where it is 70 degrees today. Tee Hee!

Pudelpointer breeder from Ohio is coming out to hunt Friday Sat. Sunday. Not good timing but will do my best to get him on some birds. 7 in at Lyons now.

Like others, Ive got to heal up the pooches before I can go again...Pheasant hunting that is.. ive got a late season muzzleloader license that opened on Monday. Seems like perfect timing for that type of a hunt, or maybe Ill get mad at the predators instead.. Or the walleyes,, or the perch... either way, Im pretty sure Im headed west for something.......

Negative 19 this morning in Chamberlain. Left the dogs and the scattergun home this trip. I do have the 22-250 riding shotgun today. Even left the muzzleloader home so I wasn't tempted to try to fill my license. Brutally cold.
