Been a while since i posted last but was wondering if anyone has heard anything about this. I am not going to get into specifics obviously, but does anyone know if kdwp has released pheasants around clinton. I have seen three this season out there while i have been hunting dove and scouting deer. Just wondered if anyone had heard through the grapevine. Again i am not gonna say where as these three may be the only pheasant left in kansas lol

More than likely they are left over from someones hunt. I have seen one or two in that area before. I have seen a few in leavenworth county from time to time. Always roosters. Someone probably planted a few to hunt and they were leftovers. There are no stocking efforts by the KDWP that I am aware of. There used to be pheasants around Perry. I have harvested a few there, but it has been a long time. 20+ years.

That is what i was thinking. I see them around my barn south of eudora but i know those come from eckmans hunting preserve. I figured someone probably bought some and took them out there and released them in a few different fields.just got me a little excited lol. I have killed a few birds in the last couple years on the north end of perry near valley falls but nothing like it used to be lol

I have hunted pheasants in many different states and had some great day's. One of the best day's I ever had was north of Valley Falls about 25 years ago. It was snowing hard and I was off of work. I had done a job for a guy up there and had secured permission to hunt his property. He allowed nobody to hunt so I was pretty proud of myself for getting permission:). I hiked to the back end of his property and he had 5 or 6 waterways of foxtail grass, about knee high, through some cut milo:eek:. By the time that day was done the dog and I had seven quail, three pheasants and two ducks I jumpshot off the creek on the way back. What a day! I still venture up that way once a year. Unfortunately that farm has been leased now since the owner died a few years ago.

I was thinking of trying Eckman again to warm the dog up a little. Do you have any experience with them? I hunted there about 8 years ago or so and was less than impressed. The cover was pretty weak.

Cover is still iffy but better than it has been. His property is about a two miles from me. He is a very nice guy and goes out of his way to help out people and make sure they have a good time. And for less than a hundred bucks for half a day it isnt too bad. I have never hunted his preserve but like i said am very close to it. Lots of open spaces but good for the dog to get out and run around in. He does have a few more crops this year than in the past so it should be better. He does have a few birds that people have not shot on his land as i see them weekly perching on the fence of my riding arena lol. If it wasnt for the neighbors being so close to me with their cattle i may have had to take a shot at a few of those birds.

I might have to give him a call and try it again. Last time he just put the birds out in some picked over corn, and my dog caught about half of them. I just would like to get the dog out on a few before my trip north in a month or so. I have tried the guy in Smithville a time or two, but he usually doesn't book bird hunts until oct or so. I also saw a guy on craigslist south of Topeka. We just don't have many options here. There used to be a guy an hour or so south of overland park that i liked, but I think he quit doing it.

I know he still puts them out for you but i also know that there are birds that live on the property in the fields. You are correct there are not many options. He does seem to be the most economical though. Just hope this year goes better than last lol. I did actually shoot more birds near the valley falls area last year in the two times i went than the two times i went to the downs ks area. Shot two opening weekend in downs. None the next weekend there and shot three total in december in the two weekends i went to valley falls area. It seems to be better there the later in the year that you get.

Hopefully the mild winters will help the birds in the NE area. I used to do real well up around Hiawatha over to Seneca and such. Was always nice to drive an hour or so and be ready to hunt. Hopefully it will continue to get better.

Carptom,

I have gone to Eckmans and actually had him work one of my britts for a couple weeks when I had to leave town on biz. He has a decent place but I like County Hunts the guys name is Don Florey which is N. of Valley Falls a few miles.

I shot my 1ST Rooster in Jeff co back in 1989 on a cold snowy day in late Janurary. I hunt up there a lot still since I now own a place by Valley and the hunting has declined drastically. We did manger a limit of roosters for 2 guys once up there back in the 90's:10sign:

I have seen a few this year but still nothing like it used to be. Carp PM me and I'll give you some local intel. Got a few spots I know that generally have birds of some sort:D

Kick'em Up!

I agree..driving an hour is better than four hours lol.. regardless it is nice to just get out and let the dogs run and get some exercise for myself lol. I have seen a few around effingham recently but nothing to get overly excited about. I will still make my opening day drive to downs to hunt with the family like i have the last thirty years because it is just fun to get together and tell stories of the past and have a good time. Really dont even care if i pull the trigger once this opening weekend as long as some of the younger family members get a few shots off as this is the first year they will be carrying guns.

I have lived north of Topeka almost my entire life. Hunted all the way from Hoyt to the Nebraska border. Lots of time in the valley falls area. Once upon a time there was a fair amount of birds in the area but times have changed. I still hunt all around this area but the birds just aren't here like they used to be.

Used to sit on an old mud road up there and watch phez fly across to a Milo field and work dogs on them regularly but those times are long gone.

Still have a few areas that I can kill a phez at but usually leave those spots alone these days.

I used to see birds on land next to the ammunition plant quite often. Been thinking about trying Eckman this year myself. Last time was 6 years ago. I had heard of a place N of Valley Falls, will have to check that place out also.
