Chicken vs. Beef vs. Lamb, etc.

Don't want brand names as I have a brand I prefer; however, what protein do you feed and why? As in all dog food discussions, less keep it civil.

Gee, I read the title and I was thinking people food and my wife and I just dined on a fabulous filet from a home raised beef.

I feed Native 2 or 3 which is a chicken and rice food.

I always go with chicken, lamb in an emergency, but never beef. The only reason being that the "beef" in the brand of dog food we buy isn't really beef. The ingredients list it as "beef meal" or something to that effect. I read an article somewhere that said it was basically a cooked concoction made from what they shovel up from the floor of the processing plant.

Might not be true, I don't know. Even if it is true, I'm sure it is probably plenty nutritious for dogs. But it just sounds gross... They eat and roll in worse stuff when we're out hunting, so I doubt they would really care.

The Chicken and Rice formula lists chicken and rice as the primary ingredients.

Nutrisource grain free chicken

gundogdoc he's on the web is a pretty sharp guy and he once told me that chicken is the most beneficial and easiest protein source for dogs to digest and utilize.

My first bird dog did best on Purina One beef and rice; my current dog does best on the chicken and rice. Both had excellent health remarked upon by vets on the Purina One which is 26/16. Excellent stools in both cases.

Raw pork shoulder?? Care to elaborate as to the benefit of this diet? Not challenging, just curious. Have not heard of this before...

The breeder we got our pup from this spring really likes salmon for his dogs. ;) Who knows... But he's been one of the best for a long time now so I went with it and our 7 yr old is getting the same. We'll mix it up here and there but I'm going with it until I hear otherwise.

I was told by a vet that Rabbit then Lamb were the easiest proteins for a dog to digest. I was also told to stay away from Chicken because if a dog is going to have an allergy to a protein it would be Chicken.

Not sure about the science behind it but I've only fed Lamb and have never had a bad result.

Everything in the dog food nugget came from dry ingredients. Meal is mostly ground up bone.

The unused wet portion of the carcass is broken down with acid and sprayed on the nuggets.

The fat is melted and also sprayed on the nuggets.

My year and a half old lab had very loose stools for month's when I got him as a pup. I tried every kind of dog food I could get my hands on but all were chicken based diets. Vet's couldn't figure out what the issue was. I read everything I could and ran across a story about allergies to chicken. I switched him to a lamb based diet and everything is fine now. Could be pure coincidence.

Chicken meal as it is much more readily available in many Brands. If your dog has a food allergy to chicken then beef or lamb is a good alternative, but you will undoubtedly find most of the major brands making a performance feed use Chicken meal as their main meat source.

On a side note. Due to the avian bird flu egg prices have risen sharply recently, but so far only eggs and not chicken prices. Hope this will not be an issue as it relates to Chicken meal in dog food.
