Bringing Dogs to Arizona

I know we have some Arizona members on this site so I'm hoping they can answer a couple of questions for me. You see, my sister and her husband just purchased a winter home in Sun City West and my wife and I can use it for free anytime we want. Thus our plans for next year, and hopefully years thereafter, is to spend at least January and February in Arizona. Of course we will be bringing our two Brittanys along. How tough is it going to be to find some place to exercise the dogs? I don't mean one of those little "dog parks", I'm talking about big spaces to run them. How big an issue will snakes and yotes be for the dogs? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I also plan to enter a couple of NSTRA trials while I'm down there. They will be a good tuneup for our spring trials up here.

Any hunting down there at that time of year?

I'm sure there is plenty of areas to run the dogs. I live in Sacramento, and with a little resourcefulness I find plenty of spots. I wouldn't worry about the coyotes either. We have 3 that live in an undeveloped field right behind my house and my GSP an I enjoy giving chase to them. In the daylight hours the coyotes keep there distance, and usually leave the area pretty quick when they realize we're tracking them. However hours of darkness is a different story. Few weeks back, we were chasing them at night, and they started hunting us. That was a adrenlian rush that I've never felt before. There were at least 2 coyotes within 40 feet of me and the only weapon I had was a dull 4 1/2 inch buck knife. I heeled up GSP and got the hell outta there.

Anyways, you will enjoy sun city. Probably be able to find a private licensed pheasant club, give the dogs a little treat, you probably won't like it much, but you'll enjoy the weather.

Quail season runs to about mid February down there Zeb.

Zeb,

You will be able to run your dogs alot. Sun City west is not far from the city limits and you can run them in the desert. Snakes in Jan. and Feb. not much of a problem, as long, the temps don't go to hot. If it's hot the snakes will be outside of the dens sunning them selves. Yotes are all over the golf courses in and around Sun City West, so I'd pay attention to your dogs in the yard, and out in the desert. Never had a dog attacked, but you hear a story or two a year.

That said every plant down here( around the Valley) has spines, needles or hooks. So pick you areas carfully. Bring dog boots lots of them.

When you come down pm me and I'll hook you up with some gambels quail hunting or maybe we can plan a trip down south for Mearns and Scalies. I'll look into gun dog clubs you might be able to get more info about this area.

Hi Dave, did you read my more recent post in this section about "dark colored urine"? If this turns out for the worse I'm not sure what her future is. I'm getting back to the vet on Monday for some discussion. Might consider taking her to the Univ. of Minn. if he feels it's serious enough.

Finding areas to run the dogs will not be a problem as the majority of the land in Arizona is state land and open to public access. As mentioned above, snakes should not be much of a problem at that time of the year.

This is also quail season so get the dogs out hunting. I would be glad to help you out there, just pm me when you are ready.
