Blackhills Area?

Thinking about doing a rental for 1-2 months in the Black hills area for November/December, if possible. How is the bird hunting in that area? I have my own dog, and willing to walk and put in the effort. Just looking to see if it would be the worth the money. How much good public land is there within 1-2 hours of Deadwood/Lead area? What birds are up that way?

Not much in the way of pheasants up there
unless you can find some released birds
Around the aspens you might find a grouse or two
If you drive out into the prairie sharptails can be good

Around the aspens you might find a grouse or two
If you drive out into the prairie sharptails can be good

You probably couldn't find a worse place in South Dakota for bird hunting. Unless you want to drive 100+ miles east or north of the Deadwood/Lead area. Also, that time of year in that area you could have a fair amount of snow.

That'd be about my last choice. Go east of the river, in an area littered with CREP & WPAs & be done with it. Consult the online Public Hunting Atlas.
