So far looks Good in areas in S.W. Kansas. Hearing some encouraging sightings. More Quail sightings as well. One pair of Quail with a brood of 12 crossing the road. All good sized.

that does sound good to bad the guy from my area can't tell you much hopefully this week sometime maybe even tomorrow night i will go scouting and can give you a better report

bird hunting

A couple friends and I are going to try and find a few birds out around Larned KS. the middle of Dec. We want to cook our own meals to keep the price down. Does anyone know of hunting cabins, houses or cottages in the Larned KS area that 3 or 4 hunters could rent for a week? We don't want to do the hotel thing unless we have to.
Thanks, we don't get to hunt away from our home state (where there are no birds) but once every 3 years or more. So this is a big deal for us.

Your December Hunt

I have had great luck watching the state of Kansas start a program building cabins in some of their state parks. Most of them are greatly affordable and sleep up to 4 hunters. Might want to go on their web site. Good Hunting!

Seeing lots of birds around his farm. Says they are like chickens because they are not scared and just hang out all day. No color to them yet and they could actually be prairie chickens because there are some around as well. He told me that he just doesn't pay close enough attention to tell what they are. GCB, good chating with you the other night. We will get out before season and cover some country!!!!! I will bring the beer and the Dutch ovens!!

Dutch oven, boy that sounds good. I may be around the ness city area. Haven't heard many bird reports around there yet. Been turkey hunting in the Northeast for several years and Pheasant in NE and SD. My first year in KS.

Yeah, I've heard don't go S and W of there unless you're after more of a challenge. Great Bend may be okay, but 40 to 65 miles S and W of there I've heard nothing but negative reports.

KB, Isn't that your part of the state that you like to hunt?
Maybe this is some misleading information?:):)

Very funny gents! Yes, those are my most frequented stomping grounds. I don't hunt public land much there so I'm not concerned about sharing information w/ others.....hell, I share information in the areas I only have public land to hunt.

If I'd been hearing good things I'm the kind of guy that can't help but sharing good news. I feel it is my "duty" to share the bad news as well and bad news is all I've been getting from that area. I plan to spend quite a bit more time N and W of there this season. There were a lot more birds up there last season than there were where I typically hunt.

@KB - Just joining on the funwagon, havin a little chuckle at your expense - ur such a great sport!!!

On a very serious note, I deeply appreciate how willingly you and all the GENTLEMEN on here so willingly exchange all kinds of information! As a semi-rookie at pheasant hunting (not hunting & fishing in general which I am lifetime adept at, just specifically rooster-chasin which is fairly new to me - but I am a fast learner), you guys have helped shorten my learning curve tremendously! Thank God for Good Ole Boys like you - we might actually gain some future newbie/rookie hunters to the sport who don't fall away out of discouragement because of quality people like you!!! :10sign:

Do you guys ever try and get together for a "forum" hunt? It would be nice to put a face to a name. I am trying hard to get excited about the fall, but it seems like a long ways away with this 110 degree heat!!!

Check out the hunt group builder sub-forum in the classifieds section. A few of us are already planning to meet for dinner in Dodge City in January. Hunting parties will be formed before and during the gathering. Not everyone that is going to the gathering will be hunting in the same group b/c not many of us do big group hunts. We'll do a big group dinner, then go hunt and hopefully most will come back for a supper that evening.

That is a great idea! I don't really enjoy hunting in large groups, but a dinner after the smaller group hunts sounds good.
