Bad Timing for My Dog to come up lame

My soon to be 8 year old Brittany, Elle, started having an issue with her backend about 5 days ago. Gave her some Rimadyl and she was better but still obviously hurting after the Rimadyl wore off. Took her to the vet today it's something to do with her right knee. Took x-rays and everything looks good in both knees and hips. Vet thinks she probably just strained her ACL. From what they could feel it did not appear to be a torn ACL. Thank God! I'm to keep her inactive for 10 days and keep her on Rimadyl, then they will check her over again. Looks like the resident opener Oct. 8-10 is definitely out. Just hope she's okay to go the first week of the regular season.

Think I will also start giving her some Cosequin. Anyone have any positive/negative experiences with Cosequin or their new product called Dasuquin?

I feel your pain! My best grouse dog came up lame opening weekend. We are giving her three weeks off and then try a short hunt.

Best wishes to both of you guys, and to the dogs.

It's hard to keep canine athletes in low gear during recovery; sometimes it is as hard on their human partners to see their partners side-lined.

I used it once. Made my dog crap through a screen door for about a week, just like when you change foods. I think it upset his stomach for a couple of days but he was more active. I used it more as a precaution. Its a supplement, not a pain reliever so you would still have to give your dog the rimadyl or other anti inflammatory

I'm quite aware what Cosequin and Dasuquin are. I'm looking to give it as a supplement once I get her healed up. I figure at 8 years of age she probably could use something to help with her joints. She has no signs of arthritis now in her knees or hips (per the x-rays) so I'm doing it for more of a preventative measure.

Hope it's nothing serious and there's a full recovery.

My Brit's 10 in November and I am keeping my fingers crossed that he has an injury-free season - and that he keeps on wanting to hunt.

Sorry to hear that, don't think we realize the abuse our dogs put on their bodies.
I gave my first dog a dog version of Glucosime Condritone, when she got about 7 years old, bought at petsmart and it really seemed to help.
Take good care of her and glad to hear x-rays showed no damage.

I've decided to start my dog an Dasuquin. http://www.dasuquinonline.com/index.html Appears it's just a little better version of Cosequin. Hopefully it will help in the future.

Still favoring her right rear leg today. You know it's bothering her when she won't jump up in the recliner with me. Any other time I can't even get settled in the recliner and she's in my lap. Hope to start seeing some improvement by next week.

That's to bad, hopefully she has a quick recovery! I feel your pain, Stanley just ripped open the inside of his leg from his knee to his Johnson. Our season opens in 2 weeks and we have a 2 week trip planned in 3. He might heal up in time if I can get him to stop jumping around like a kangaroo!

Elle has not shown much improvement and is also showing some other symptoms. While she still does favor her right rear leg to some degree she also has times when it appear she has some instability in her entire rear end. In addition we had a couple of days where she could not bend down to eat or drink and we had to put her bowls on a stool. She has also become very lethargic and on at least 3 occasions has had what appears to be mini seizures where she becomes quite agitated and starts to quiver. This has led me to think we are dealing with something other than an injured leg. As I thought back I remembered that 2-3 days prior to some of these symptoms showing up I gave her HeartGard and PetArmor Plus flea and tick. The PetArmor is Walmart's equivalent to Frontline Plus. I've done a fair amount of reading about possible side effects of the ingredients in PetArmor and Frontline and am thinking that they may have caused her problems. The ingredients are actually a Neuro-Toxin and in some rare occasions have caused many of the symptoms I'm seeing. I'm thinking it has affected her central nervous system. I have a call into my vet to discuss this.

Anyone else ever experience and of these side effects from Frontline or similar products?

Hope things get better soon

Zeb sorry to hear Elle is not feeling well. Lucy my GWP is acting very lathargic also so I'm taking her in this week. I'm pretty confident her Lyme's has returned. Got several ticks off her in last few days mainly wood ticks but also found a deer tick. 1st one I've ever seen they are tiny. Hope Elle gets better and good luck.

Elle really doesn't have the typical Lyme Disease symptoms. Lyme Disease is pretty rare out here in SD.

I'm sure you have done this and little late in the year, but have you check her over real well for ticks, especially the ears? I had a britt when I lived in South Carolina, that had issues with balance, back legs would just fall limp while running and she was lethargic I called the vet hotline and when they called back they had me look her over real well. I found a tick in her ear canal the size of my little fingernail. I removed the tick and she was better within the hour. I realize this is probably a long shot but just thought I would share. I hope you can figure it out quickly so Elle can get off injure reserve soon.

I hope you get some positive news and to the root of the issues, keeping Elle in our thoughts.

This sounds a little dumb. But could be an inner ear infection. I had a setter, male, 8 years old started doing the same thing. His face drooped on one side too like he had a stroke. Ended up being an inner ear infection. Ear drops and antibiotics cleared it up within 10 days. No extra side effects

Lyme's

Anyone dealing with signs of Lyme's should see vet right away. Get the dog on Doxycyline as a treatment. I have seen a turn around in as little as 1-2 days after starting med. We just had to put one of our females down who lost her 1 1/2 long battle with Lyme's. I think it mainly was due to her pregnancy when we found out she had Lyme's, we weren't able to medicate her with doxy due to the affects it would of had on the pups. It was a sad thing to watch happen over the course of time. It just got to the point where her quality of life was suffering and I couldn't bare to watch her struggle anymore.

I know here in WI the ticks have been absolutely terrible the last week with the warmer weather we have been having. I run preventick collars and frontline on my dogs. This combo seems to work well at keeping the ticks at bay.
