I just got back from my last trip to NW Kansas for the season with a few friends. Hunted Friday and Saturday and was pleased to see good numbers of birds in a few areas. I didn't see a single Prairie Chicken or covey a quail however. Friday was a great late season day with lots and lots of pointed birds. A steady breeze with moist air helped the dogs pin bird after bird. Most were hens but between five guys and six dogs we ended up harvesting seven roosters, and missed at least that many. We saw 40-50 birds in four different walks and encountered at least a half dozen pheasants on every walk we took. Day two was warm windy and dry and tougher for the dogs to pin birds but they still managed to get several points and I even got to shoot a rooster over a point with an honor from my youngest GSP Molly. She's really starting to track well but needs to learn to pace herself and not push running birds so hard. Only four roosters the second day but could have had more with better shooting. It was encouraging to see fair numbers of roosters and quite a few hens late in the season. With favorable weather for the nesting season I think some areas have the potential of rebounding fairly quick back to normal numbers.
