Well, we got out here early Friday morning to Kansas out near Dodge City. The first day, Friday that is, we got 4 birds. There is myself, Colton (12yr old son), and two reall good buddies of mine.

On the way out, my 1yr old yellow lab female got tangled in a barb wire fence when were airing them on the way out (thursday night/friday morning) and she cut herself on the wire. Didn't realiz it at first and then saw all the BLOOD:eek: Got her all wrapped up the best I could considering I couldn't see anything.

Got her bandaged up and stop in Garden City and wrapped it all again after we stopped at walmart there to get more stuff. Didn't hunt her Friday, a little bit Saturday. She is doing good actually. I was scared to death that she got cut deep and I would have to go to the vet, however lucky that they weren't to deep cuts, no damage or anything serioud. Had my first aid kit with emt gel and stuff.

So back to the hunt....after the hunt Friday, ate at the Bad Habit in Dodge City Friday night and ate an awesome T-bone like the size of my plate for $16:eek: and drank some cold beer:cheers:

Hunted Saturday and got 12 birds....it was actually pretty good considering the conditions. Got a nice cold front that moved through. We had 3 more guys show up (I hunt all private with local friends I have known for years) Things are as bad as they say, however I pray and hope for rain and good snow for them so things can rebound for next year. Ate a small, hole in the wall place Saturday night and had Prime Rib special with all the fixins...$15.99.

I love supporting these towns during hunting season. It is my own stimulus plan!!

Hunting on Sunday and early Monday morning and then heading back to Colorado Springs.

I have been coming out here since 1996 and it isn't just about the birds...it is about spending time with my buddies, locals friends I have known for years and now spending time with my son.

I will give a finished report when I get back...take care and god bless...

Meanwhile back at the ranch,

Greg

+1 on Bad Habits. Mr. Byrd may correct me, but Casey's Cowtown has the best ribeye in town IMO. Glad you all are having a good hunt!

See new thread......Sunday 20 November we ended up with 7 roosters between 6 of us and yes Colton finally got his first pheasant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:10sign::cheers::):D;)

I will post pics from my cell phone when I get back. I don't have the cable with me out here.

Tell Colton congrads, if you want me to mount it get in touch with me, do not skin him, wipe him down with a damp rag and let dry, place a cotton ball in his mouth and take a piece of thread and wrap the mouth close, best way is to take a needle and thread the string and push it through the nostrel opening than wrap around beak that tie it off. Once bird is dry place the bird in an old womans nylon start at the head and workdown to the tail feathers wrap in newspaper than place in the freezer.

You're a mighty good man, Jim - your very generous offer will make that boy even happier than he already is & give him something to fondly remember every time he sees it for the rest of his life!!! :10sign: :10sign: :10sign:

Hey Copheasanthunter,
That was a very nice offer you made to the youngsters and I'm glad Colton could take you up on it.

I am not that knowledgeable of the steaks in Dodge as chicken fried steak is about as high as I get on the 'beef steak pyramid'. I seldom go out to eat. I have had the $8.99(now $9.99 Sunday through Wednesday evenings) prime rib at the Casino twice. Once you could cut with a fork, once I sent my knive back to the kitchen to be sharpen.

I did have a really good ribeye at Ham's a couple years ago and have had really good ribeyes at events catered by Brent Cunningham. Brent has closed Ham's and started Mariah Hills Steak & Ale at Mariah Hills Golf Course.

Sorry to disappoint, but I am not a steak eating machine.:(

I ate at Ham's, loved it and then they closed. Haven't been to the other place. Casey's is good, but $$$$.....

I do love a good chicken fried steak also....

Looking at coming back out in January...

I will say that the cover wasn't the best, but those ringnecks are tough birds. I hope and pray y'all get a good snowy winter, wet spring and things can start getting back to normal somewhat.

Everyone I talked to said it was as dry and the dirty 30's...if it wasn't for the technology and better farming practices and such, things would have been just like it was then.
