And so it starts

Thats a nice hunt.

Those are bigger birds than I thought they were. Going to have to drive out that way some time and give them a try.

They are a pheasant sized bird... We walk in over some pretty tough terrain for almost an hour. We busted three seperate coveys and four singles.. Good year so far.

I have heard that they are good eating. Would love to get my two setter on them some day.

They taste great... My wife says it is the filet mignon of chicken...
She like them better than pheasant.

Amen to that. If I had more patience, I'd pluck more of them. As-hot-as-you-can-get-your-oven roasted whole skin-on birds with some butter, garlic and thyme rubbed under and on top of the skin to about medium is just heaven.

I'm actually having a friend in the restaurant business smoke a couple in his commercial-grade smokehouse on Tuesday to take with me on our Alaska float.

Brine#1 = Pretty standard poultry brine, with 1/3 of the water replaced by Dales Pale Ale

Brine#2 = Above - with the addition of a pound of Anaheim and Jalapenos from the garden and subbing pilsener for pale ale.

Wish it were as easy as a pet'n shoot.... We earn every bird.. Almost an hour walking in up a hill that doesn't seem so steep until you're half way up wondering if you heart is going to explode. It is worth it every time no matter how hard it is geting up the hill.
I appreciate the ribbing....
Spent half a day on Rampart and saw one bird. No shot though. My lab flushed him while I was cutting between some trees...

I'll take the razzing.... Thanks..... Years of walking looking for honey holes.
