Abundance of raccoons which my dogs are finding

I 've had my dogs get into 3 coons this year already 2 in Neb. and 1 in KS. I've seen it happen one other time but wasn't my dog thankfully. This year One of my dogs have got one on 2 different occasions and another got one in Ks. I have never had this problem before. Is it just me or is everyone running into them in the fields hunting? By the way German wirehairs are great coon dogs had nice points on all of them. Then the fight was on they go crazy had a heck of time getting harvey off of one. After the second time I just said screw it and let them go at it. The dogs came out big winners besides a couple scratches.

Around where I live is polluted with them.Myself and several of my friends are going after them big time.Snce opening day we have gooten rid of 100 plus of them ugly critters. We plan on hitting them hard till the season ends.We plan on keeping track of how many we get and add up our totals at the end.

The smart big ones try to pick a fight in deeper water, be sure your rabies are up to date, maybe you and the dog! Sounds like we need a resurgence of the raccoon fur market. Eat Mor Coon!

One season, Young Bert, the not-right dog, a GWP delighted in finding raccoons in a boggy spot, bracketed by CRP and corn fields. Got so I carried a Model 24, .22lr and 20 gauge, instead of my regular shotguns.

He went from enthusiastic hunting dog to something primeval.

We were not amused.

(but made for some great stories. :) )

are you trapping them?

We are using both dogs and traps. We use cage traps around farm buildings to keep them out of livestock feed and from doing harm to the owner's pets. When using the the dogs between the 6 of us there is about 400 acres that we are allowed. It covers swamp ground, woods and some low ground that has good cover for coon.

Remember what we talked about my gsp doing for tracking earlier this year? Well she got a full grown male that weighed 18 lbs. 2 days after coon season opened. She got hold of it and broke it's neck right off the bat.The fight lasted less than 2 mjnutes and she came out of it with no marks at all. I was grateful for that and was lucky too that was all that happened. Now she goes nuts when she smells coons.

I've trapped something like 20 of them in wire traps beside my chicken coop in the last year. Those big boar raccoons are freaking scary. I hope I don't have to tangle with one in the field.

Thanks for the post, yes we are both up to date on shots. I guess these wirehairs just love fur that was a good statement. He goes crazy over cats, and squirrels, and anything with fur. Luckily he doesn't bother my folks little shitzu I was worried. Actually he's very good with other dogs and small children. Yes my old dog has got into 4 skunks in his life time. Have a good day back to work after 4 days off today.
