4wd vs. 2wd with limited-slip

Horses and mules seem to get about anywhere, minimal road damage, but mine get there behind a 4 x 4 Suburban, got to get home! Supposed to be the freezer in middle and the northeast according to Farmer's almanac.

Not only do I want a 4WD, but it should also have limited slip rear! And it must have some ground clearance, so those little suv's are out.

I gave up my Pathfinder with 18mpg for a Subaru Crosstrek XV that gets 30mpg on average. I never thought I'd own a Subaru but the thing has AWD, room for 2 dogs and my hunting gear, and pretty impressive ground clearance.

I took it off road this summer in fields and hills and didn't have any problems. It's no truck but with what I save in gas I can hunt more. And at worst I'll just have to walk a little further to the field if the road is bad.

On the greasy roads in MT and ND, 4wd didn't seem to help. I found other places to hunt. That stuff was slicker than snot.

Limited slips are garb, a clutch pack that wears out and "slips" when you need it the most...false sence of security

4x4 with LOW range is so much better than a 2wheel drive with high range

2wd/4wd

When I hunt the week after Christmas in SD the 4WD low range has bailed me out a couple times. You could go with a winch, but after six seasons out there I still haven't found anything that I could have hooked it to, so glad to have 4wd

A LS will no doubt let you down when you need it the most, say if one tire has all the traction and one has none (one tire on the road and one on a slick shoulder). A 2wd with a locker (either selectable or automatic) will do well on and off road but maybe scetchy on an icy raod. Its a toss up but a 4wd with no traction aid and a 2wd with a locker will spin the same amount of tires.

I prefer 4 wd all day long and a factory ls or aftermarket locker is good too. 4wd helps keep you in the middle of a mud road. Get in the ditch and it can be bottomless. An old timer told me one time he prefers 4wd because "it helps you get stuck much further from help" and I will admit we did a few times many years ago.

OK, how about a locker in the rear and a limited slip in the front with a winch incase those don't work :D
Of course it would cost me a small fortune in gas to drive it all the way from NC to KS but sure is the ticket when it comes to getting around the back country:thumbsup:

I drive a 2wd right now out here in michigan and it makes it out to south dakota every year and does fine. It doesnt have any trouble in the michigan winters either just put good tires on and you should be fine. I have some good year wranglers on it and they work great!!

A 4x4 with no lockers or limited slip is still much better than a 2wd with a locker....even with one front tire and one rear tire pulling makes a big different in a 4x4.... weight of engine/front end helps keep it moving.
