2011 Ruffed Grouse

I'm 70 miles east of walker just off Hwy 200.

Walker always means a visit to Reeds and cost's me money...LOL

Good luck, should be a beautiful weekend. Enjoy yourself, drive safe. there's already a steady flow from the south on Hwy 65.

LOL I was just there today! I called the wife while I was there and she answered with "How much this time?"

I must have driven right by your house today.

Why yes you did if you came from Duluth/Floodwood area, I'm just 3 miles off 200.

I use to buy a lot of guns from Reeds when Chad ran their gun Dpt. Now that he's gone, I haven't bought any there, can't get a deal to save my soul. Still a must stop when in Walker

Good Morning!

I took the neighbor kid out grouse hunting this morning. Had a nice walk and got a bird for him to bring home to his mom.

Great pic, nice A400 too. Nice of you send it home with the boy for them to eat. A real sportsman you are.

Good hunting, Onpoint

Birds are beautiful. Waiting for cover to drop before heading out, another 2 weeks and should be good.

Any reports on population of birds would be nice, if cycle correct should be at or near top now.

I've hunted the Paul Bunyan State Forest a couple times. About a flush per hour there. Still to many leaves. The colors are worth the outing, magnificent this year.

I was Up in the mcgregor area Last weekend a lot of leafs were still up on the tree's and the under brush was also still very thick ended with 3 one from a point and the other two from wild flushes!

Took a 20 Min walk just now and jumped two birds. Best walk since the season began. Still tough to see, fired twice at the first flush, just shot tree's and brush..NO BIRD

Well, after that little walk this afternoon. Goldeneye called me to talk about a shooten iron and kinda got me all pumped up. I have been feeling poorly for several days and haven't had much get up and go. Thanks to him, he got me all fired up. I took the truck and Gus, and went to a area I haven't hunted in some time. It's beyond where the masses of 612ers venture. All together today i jumped 5 birds, killed 3. Anytime your shooting over 50% on Ruff Grouse. You best be happy as all get out. The first two schooled me bad with the 28ga Cynergy Feather. So I switched to the Browning Sweet Sixteen. I shot 100% with it.

Here's a pic late this afternoon

First time out with my boys

I finally got out last weekend. Having read the dire reports in the papers I expected little action. I had five flushes in an hour and got one. My son, Nathan, 3, was with me the first half hour or so, then he was joined by his older brother, 5.

And now I know how the cat felt after someone put a bell on it...

``Are we going to find a ruffed grouse or a pheasant?''
``Did you get that one?''
``How come you miss all the time? Is it because you're old?''

From the mouths of babes...

LOL, That's great!! My wife's response is always something along the lines of, "You shot one?!?!?"

If my wife hadn't been hiking up the Shore I would have sworn she put them up to it. Since she didn't it's somehow funnier -- and worse. Sheesh...

I love these posts!

It appears there was a nice late hatch this year. Today was a good day, summer in MN is finally over.

Hope there are plenty of late broods on the MN pheasant range too.

I finally got a weekend of ruffed grouse and woodcock in north central MN. Around Jacobson. I hit it hard for 2 days with my good GSP and flushed about 10 woodcock and 6 grouse. Bagged one of each. Sawed off a couple trees or would have had a couple more woodcock. Grouse numbers did not seem too good but I had talked to others that hunted in the same area earlier and it sounded like they got into more birds. It's kind of a crap shoot looking for grouse in the thick north woods, but a lot of fun. Tough going to plow through the woods a lot of the time.

With my earlier SD combo trip I have had a good mixed bag of upland birds this year, shooting at least one of each of the following: sharptail grouse, Hungarian partridge, pheasant, ruffed grouse, woodcock. All wild birds.
