2 3/4" vs 3"

No tox

I use 2 3/4 Federal Heavy Weights for a no tox in WIA and WPAs out there. Geez will that shell pound a bird at a distance. Expensive tho, to say the least.

Winchester has (sort-of) copied the PS shell with their own ROOSTER XR load. Like the PS, it has the so-called special wad to hold the shot together. I've fired some of the 2 3/4", 1 1/4 oz. #4s in the field, using the same I/C choke as PS.

These loads have copper-plated lead pellets running 1300 FPS, which are a bit slower than the PS loads tested. Not sure why, but this ammo did not kill the late-season birds as well as the PS ammo did. But, I've had crippling issues with other Win. ammo, especially the SUPER PHEASANT 2 3/4", 1 3/8 oz load running 1450 FPS.

As such, I'll stick with the Fed Wing-Shok or Rem Nitro Pheasant.

Interesting. I was thinking about trying the XR and or Super Pheasant load but went with Rem. NITRO pheasant Instead.

1 1/4 oz 4's isn't a lot of pellets, possibly modified would have worked better?

I haven't shot 4s out of my 20ga. IMO the shot count just isn't there in a 20ga shell. I'll stick with 5s and pick the choke according to circumstances. When the going gets tough with late season birds I'll bite the bullet and use the Federal Heavyweight 7s. When I miss, which I'm no stranger, it will cost me. Heck, I bought gas for my 97 Silverado for $1.77 in SD, so it all evens out. I can rationalize just about anything.

Here's something you can rationalize. ;)

If you look at the load chart above you'll see it takes a roughly 1 1/2 oz of lead 4's to equal the pellet count in 1 1/4 oz of 5's. That's why if going up to 4's it makes some sense to use 1 1/2 oz or at the very least 1 3/8.

20 ga. your choices are certainly more limited.

Yeah these gas prices are great. Hope they keep coming down. Haven't seen these kind of prices in at least 15 years.

I have not seen a 20g shell 1 3-8 or 1 1/2 oz of 4s. If it exists I would use it use it when I go back out in Dec. Let me know if you come across something.
