    Chasing

Our PP will do this and so did our lab (i never did train him to sit and wait on a ecollar) on pheasants. Similar to ruffed grouse, our PP bumps them, but I've noticed this fall she is starting to point earlier vs trying to figure out the scent and getting closer. I was told more wild bird...

    Late Season Advice

Got back from SD on tuesday, hunted NW of Mitchell. Pretty tough going for us, we have private land access which we saved for sunday. Friday and saturday we stuck to public stuff. most of the CREP pieces we hunted were hayed. Kicked up 10 birds between those 2 days, got 2 out of 3 roosters those...

    solo hunting

when i first started hunting, we used to hunt SD in the line birgrades, as I grow older, the more I enjoy hunting solo with the dogs or with my growing kids or my father. When I hunt with friends, they just dont stay quiet, I cringe anytime they slam the doors or start yelling/talking in the fields

    2023 Season

100% agree. I laugh every time a article in Outdoor News or PF's magazine/podcast telling everyone late season is the time to go with no pressure

    11/18-11/21 Report-SE SD

I do! 2 3/4"? All i shoot for pheasants and late season mallards CREP NW of Mitchell can also be pathetic, I'll know what it looks like in a couple of weeks, but over the last 5 years, we've found one that had decent cover but I see they took it out this year

    2023 Season

Joined the MN Backcountry Hunters and Anglers Pheasant hunter yesterday in New London, pretty slow going. Great looking habitat in that area, saw 1 hen and 1 rooster all day in our smaller group.

Pheasant hunting during gun deer opener

I've done it 2nd weekend a few years ago in western MN and never saw a deer hunter or phes hunter. As others stated, make sure no other vehicles are around and I would glass some of the surrounding private pieces, as it seems like the box stands surround the public stuff

Does South Dakota law enforcement use pheasant decoys?

catch the slobs, lawful citizens would not shoot. they probably set this up due to numerous calls in that area of someone trespassing and or shooting towards buildings. now is a good chance they'll catch them doing their police work

    Iowa Opener

Got back from Iowa on monday evening. overall, it was a great area to explore. Not as much pressure but not as much public land either. Started off waiting for the opening bell on a Ihap piece, but got cutoff from guys coming in from a private piece, so we picked up and moved, found a fresh spot...

    Ticks

Not sure on your source there, but you maybe confused with mosquitos, according to the u of mn, both sexes bite and the nymphs as well... The dogs will have to sleep in the kennels after a grouse hunt, i learned this the hard way camping this past spring when both dogs were on our bed, ticks...

    Ticks

the deer ticks are bad right now around here and in the grouse woods. We use bravecto and sometimes some spray, but I worry that it would interfere with their scenting since its pretty strong.

    Iowa Pheasants

My friend and I are going to participate in the IA opener this year for the first time. We'll be in the NW region. As a MN/SD/ND pheasant hunter (cattatils, CRP, willow clumps, etc), just curious if the habitat is much different than MN? It seems like there are more rolling hills with more...

    2023 Season

Hunted north of morris about 20 miles; bird numbers were low overall, the prospects map maybe accurate there. While waiting for 9am I saw 3 or 4 hens fly into the corn, then while walking another group of 3 flushed wild into the corn. Walked until 1130 on the same WPA with great cover but never...

    1. How many people in your group? Friends and/or family? Just me opening morning, maybe my 9 year old son for the 2nd half if football is over in time... 2. How many dogs, and what kind of dogs? 2; a 2 year old PP and my 12 year old Lab 3. Region/area of the state you will be hunting? NW of...

    Boss shotgun ammunition

I inherited a Browning A5 12 guage from my late gramps; the gun was manufactured in the early 50's so I can not use modern steel. Finding 2 3/4" bismuth locally is a challenge, so I've tried boss, kent, and hevi-shot. I use #5's for pheasant and late season field mallards and it works great...
