    2023 Season

Nice looking labs. I changed breeds a couple years ago but will always have a fondness for labs especially the black ones

    North Kansas

Had an appointment up north with a customer and figured I would throw the dog in the truck and hit a couple small spots a family member owns up north of topeka a half hr or so. He doesn’t bird hunt but doesn’t want it disturbed till after deer season. Usually good for a rooster or two if I’m...

    Pudelpointer and Drahthaar comparisons please

I would agree to the above. I have not owned a Draht but have hunted with a couple and a neighbor has one. From what I have gathered the fur drive is stronger in the Drahts and they can demand a bit more from their handlers. I have had a Pudelpointer for about a year and a half. I will say she...

    Pro vs. Cons

I have a similar process with a heavy wire comb. She really doesn’t like me messing with her ears. But she gets wax build up and I have to trim them out. It starts stinking at some point

    Pro vs. Cons

Yeah mine does the same thing but she ends up eating them too for whatever reason. Then I have to listen to her hacking them up, sometimes she ends up throwing up during this process. I have used mane and tail or some cooking spray which does help some. She has wire hair on her back but it’s...

    Pro vs. Cons

This is interesting. I recently switched back to a pointer after several labs. She is a two year old Pudelpointer. Pros: she has a very high motor with great prey drive. She is a decent retriever although not as strong as the labs. Nose is probably better and runs all day. Range wise I am...

    Mild weather hunting

I have hunted with plenty of guys with bells on their dogs. Sometimes we did great…. Sometimes not. Same as when none of them had bells. While I am a big proponent of not making excessive/ unnecessary noise, by late season those birds are on edge the second tires hit the gravel 1/2 mile away...

    NEK...Ok

I’m actually heading up that way middle of next week. Used to be a regular occurrence as it’s only an hr and a half from my house. I skipped the last couple but with it being slow beats hanging around the house. Had some great hunts up there 15 years ago and more

    Getting Good Rain

If you are struggling to pay bills perhaps you should be working instead of bird hunting. Resident hunting licenses are horribly cheap here. I would pay 3-4 times the rate if the money was spent on habitat. It is entertainment to me and I am hardly wealthy

Chokes for wild pheasants in a 16 ga. O/U

That’s exactly how I always felt with good, aggressive labs. I run IC/ mod in my Citori. Get them on the ground and put them in the vest. With this dog I may have to rethink that strategy a bit. While she has been a serviceable retriever, she ain’t no lab.

    3rd Eastern Oregon Trip.

Looks like a good haul. I was through the area awhile back when I went out and picked up my dog. Little over 1200 miles from here. Maybe someday

    Where to go in December?

Make sure you’re driving a rube wagon like an Escalade or a big Expedition. Also don’t be afraid to pass out some cash to try and gain private access. You might bring some cheap beer and act stupid

    Dinners served

Ok I have to admit this was amazing. Browned flour covered pheasant chunks on the blackstone in a little oil. Sautéed some mushrooms, onions, fresh garlic and spinach in butter. Added some boiled down chicken broth and cream to make a sauce. Combined everything over a bed of Ziti with fresh...
