    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

December I’ve hit a bit of a wall, the no snow has made it tough. Still flushing birds every trip out, but a lot of brown; this guy broke a 25+ hen in shotgun range stretch. Nice cackle too. Up to 18 in WI, been a great year. Called the tipline as some idiots dumped a bunch of geese on the side...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

I keep pretty good notes, my golden will be 9 in January and I have a detailed log of how many birds we've killed and in which state. 15 has been a good average for WI over the last 9 years for me, this year a little better as I'm at 17 and still have a month of season to hunt yet. Bird...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

Hunting continues to be good, putting multiple birds up every trip although sometimes not roosters. They’ve moved into the thick thermal cover. Even found a released reject last week that sat just tight enough.

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Yeah but that's an off-season project, I uploaded a few quick ones to my instagram @luke_grossy if you want to check it out. I'll eventually have longer length stuff on youtube in Jan/Feb. Not trying to become famous or anything, it's pretty much for me to look back on and something to show my...

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Yesterday we flushed 6 with the only 2 with color getting up just a little too wild. Today we flushed about the same but two parrots held just a little too tight. Hunting continues to be good mid-week. Luckily my new gig allows me to get out a couple times a week.

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Hunting around home has been great in the last week or so, killed 7 in our last 4 hunts which is great by WI standards. Been flushing plenty of birds, fortunate I live in a part of the state that has a healthy wild population. I’ve been sticking to weekday hunts which has seemed to help. Been...

Workout / train (humans, not dogs) for upcoming season

I exercise year round as well. I run a couple half marathons every summer, and the dog runs with me everyday so we're both ready by the time the roosters come calling.

    First time Pheasant Trip SD

I've gone all times of the year; I honestly didn't notice a lot more pressure on opening weekend compared to the 2nd-3rd weeks when we used to go. If someone is in a spot just go somewhere else, it really isn't all that complicated. If a field has good habitat and there are crops nearby there...

    Uninsulated Boots??

I've pheasant hunted in -10 and lower in my Kenetrek Mtn Extreme Uninsulated and have never gotten cold. If I stop they will, but as long as I'm moving my feet at least will not get cold in really any weather. I even broke through in a slough up to my mid-thigh one year and my legs started to...

    Muddy paws in house.

It's kind of a pain but this is what we use at my house and it works pretty well. Have a dry towel right next to the door too. Dexas Popware

Pheasant Mount Came Out Pretty Good!

Got him hung on the tailgate, I think it looks pretty cool with where I’ve got him. Plenty of room on the other side for another one down the line as well.

    Ear protection while bird hunting

I broke down 2 years ago and bought a pair of Soundgear Phantoms; very expensive but have been worth it. I can hear the locations of flushes just fine. When someone is talking to me 15-30 feet away I have a hard time hearing them but if they’re further than that I can again for some reason. I...

Pheasant Mount Came Out Pretty Good!

I got my WI rooster from December 2022 back this week. Turned out pretty well I think, what do guys think? I’ve shot 200 pheasants over my golden, but this one crossed all the boxes for the most part of what I wanted (plan to get one over each dog mounted). Color was ok, shot around home on a...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

I got my wild public rooster from December 2022 back this week. Turned out pretty well. I’ve shot 200 pheasants over my golden, but this one crossed all the boxes for the most part of what I wanted (plan to get one over each dog mounted). Color was ok, but it was a late season bird and a tail...

    Boss shotgun ammunition

I've been shooting both BOSS #5's and #4's in the magnum's out of my 12 guage in 3". I used them each for one full season and found better success with the #5's so that's what I'm going to shoot until something better comes along. They're spendy but not horrible, for the amount of money I...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

I had pretty much the same sentiment. I've got 4-5 absolutely dynamite late season spots that I didn't even bother with, no snow to push pheasants in there made for some tough hunting in December. November was great, I had one week during my normal bowhunting vacation where I killed 7 in 4...

    Tail talk 😄

I tend to like the long tail of my golden, when he's birdy I enjoy seeing it wag to the point where it's almost hitting him in the face, also like the sound of it in the cattails when I can't see him, the sound of that tail thumping and a couple of cattails moving makes me smile. It wags...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

I think you're right on the cattails. We flushed a lot in really thick switchgrass and cattails Sunday, but even in December we've been doing fine in the grass. Until we get some actual snow they're not going to be forced to hit that thick cover yet.

    Brag Post

My little field golden flushed and retrieved his 200th career pheasant this weekend. 108 of those in the not so great pheasant state of WI and 92 in SD. I always told my wife it’d be neat to get to 250 over him; and as long as he stays healthy into the tail end of his career I don’t see any...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

Up to 14 on the year. Hunted Saturday in the rain without moving a bird. My dumbass didnt bring my gun in overnight and it froze. Sunday we flushed a big brood with 4 staggered roosters in it and I could only watch helplessly as they all flew away unharmed. I did get it thawed out and killed an...
