    Getting my first Bird Dog

If you're thinking at all about labs, don't just limit yourself to a Fox Red Lab (part of the yellow class). It's just a color thing and most breeders that worry more about color don't worry nearly as much about hunting pedigrees or family values. I say this even though I have been restricted...

    Remote Releases

Good luck. I looked for a used one for several years without any luck. I ended up ordering a new one from Lion Country Supply that was on sale for a little over $200 about 4 years ago. I have been very happy with it while training my two pointing labs, and helping buddies with their flushing...

Why do you got what you got?

My wife has always told me I could get any color Lab as long as it was yellow. Parker and Brady are numbers 6 and 7 in our string of yellow male (used to be) labs. Parker is now 11 and sadly, this is his first year of retirement from pheasant hunting. Brady will soon be 8 so it's time to start...

Over-Under Tips for an O/U Newbie.

The gun may be just too light for you compared to your other gun, and you "poke and shoot" rather than swing. I chased the lightweight 12GA O/U game with a 6lb 4oz Lanber with 26" barrels. It seemed to fit. I compared POA/POI with my other guns and they were similar. I finally did some...

    Beeper collar vs GPS

That's a great story about your dog chasing a rooster into a badger hole. I'm glad the badger wasn't there.

    Beeper collar vs GPS

Wow-you guys are great. I can't believe the number of responses so quickly. So some clarifications. Both my labs will point but not that often do the wild pheasants, especially roosters, cooperate. They normally will quarter pretty close but I sometimes have to "steer" the older dog Parker...

    Beeper collar vs GPS

Good timing on this post. I was hunting in NoDAk opening weekend and I lost my younger lab Brady for about 90 minutes in an over the head standing cornfield with windy conditions. That's the first time this has ever happened to me. I had seen it happen to friends with bigger running...

    I lost her too soon

So sorry to hear about this Kick. What a tough year. Anything other than "old age" is always an extra heart breaker. Time will help heal. Tom

Ultimate guide to pheasant hunting gear

Hey K-em-up, are you still with CZ in KC? I haven't kept track of you since they closed our Pheasants Forever chapter in Denver. Tom

    Lock and Load for ND!

I got a last minute invitation as a substitution in a group of six hunting private land in N. Dakota across the border from Lemmon, SD. The final stats were six guys, 3 days, one dog (my lab), 4 birds. The story we were able to piece together was two straight years of extreme drought, and...

    CO Pheasant Help

As noted above the first layer of counties west of KS/NE are usually the best but the next layer west can also produce birds. The key is scouting, fuel purchases and boot-leather time on the ground hunting. It changes every year depending on crops, what land is enrolled in WIA, weather-all...

    Best sub 2k dollar o/u

My two primary pheasant guns are: "fair weather"-12ga. maple Win 101 O/U at 7lbs 2oz, "foul or fowl" weather-12Ga Browning Maxus S/A at 7lbs 1 oz. At 8lbs 4oz, my 12Ga Citori stays mostly in the safe. My Colorado pheasant hunting is 99.6% walking and .4% shooting so weight is important.

    Best sub 2k dollar o/u

What happened to the Over/Under plan? There are advantages and disadvantages with both O/U and SemiAuto shotguns. It will be up to you to figure out what makes most sense for you-and that includes the gauge. Aside from economics, the best advice is different guns for different sports--but make...

Rest easy my friend, a tribute to Wyatt

I'm so sorry to hear about Wyatt, FlushedUP. There is no question that it is the hardest thing about bonding with our dogs, their lives seem to just fly by in an instant. But it is the price we pay for the love and companionship we receive from them in return. You will never "replace" him but...

    Dogs in a Topper

A Suburban would be the best compromise for me but they quit selling them with diesels. So my compromise daily driver, trailer tower, hunting vehicle is a Dodge/Cummins Megacab with a topper. My two labs ride in kennels in the fold down back seat area with the doors facing the passenger side...

    Footage from my Final Trip

Sorry-I've been away from the forum most of this season. It's sad putting away all the hunting gear after the season. My two labs and I hunted 8 days in SoDak and 11 days in eastern CO. Our last trip was Jan 28, 29, and 30. It sure got windy. But we also had about 5" of almost new snow on...

    Pheasants Forever Closes Denver Chapter

As some of you know I have been a strong supporter/volunteer for the MetroDenver Chapter 816 of Pheasants Forever. For the past 4 years I was the Secretary on our chapter board of directors. Recently, PF Regional Rep Bob Hix, with the blessing of National PF management, closed down our chapter...

    New England/Regent/Mott area

I've been invited to hunt on a friend's property near Regent, ND. Several of us from the Denver area would head up there to hunt a couple of days with my friend and then several more days of public land hunting. I've been reviewing the plots atlas. Can any of you offer any advice on dog...
