    Golden Retriever question

I haven’t see them hunting here in Colorado. There are several that belong to and participate in the local HRC club.

    All My Shotguns

My first O/U was a CZ Southpaw Sterling. Worked well initially and then started discharging both barrels with 1 trigger pull. Set that gun aside for several years and pulled it back out this year with the same result. Contacted CZ 3 weeks ago and they sent shipping paperwork. Sent the gun off...

    Increasing distance of point

A flusher may be more desirable in heavy cover. I’m not sure though.

    Increasing distance of point

I think that there a southern Colorado HRC club, possibly based out of Pueblo? The retrieving stuff is generally the same. Their upland test requires the dog to flush the bird and then be steady to wing and shot. At one time I thought having a pointing lab would be the greatest! I purposely...

Looking for a black lab puppy. Not paying more than 500.

I’ll leave the dogs’ crates in the back of the suv with the doors of the crates off and the back door of the suv open. I’ll often find them in the crate napping.

Thanks for the update. Are you planning on running the pup in APLA tests?

Hunter harassment walking road right of ways...

In my opinion ditches are dangerous to hunt. Between the barbed wire fences and the cars flying up and down the road it’s not worth it from my perspective.

    Increasing distance of point

Good points by LC. I also don’t believe the APLA lJudges will ding the dog at a test for being “too close” to a planted bird.

    Increasing distance of point

Most of the PLs that I’ve seen do point pretty close to planted birds (mostly at hunt tests) or on training days. And the same dog may or may not point wild birds depending on cover and whether the bird starts to run. I personally wouldn’t worry about it unless I was going to run APLA tests.

    Where to go in December?

In my opinion, pen raised birds do have a place depending on a person’s age and experience, a dogs age and experience, one’s health, available time, where you live, resources and so on.

    It has begun!

Goose, I’m not sure why you don’t like crates or e collars. For me, the crate is a safe place for my lab when I’m driving. I use The e collar (tone and vibrate) as a way to communicate with my lab without yelling or blowing a whistle. And the GPS is helpful if I lose sight of the dog.

    Opening weekend

    1. How many people in your group? Friends and/or family? 1-3 depending on what everyone is doing. I’ll be out for sure. 2. How many dogs, and what kind of dogs? 1 lab per person 3. Region/area of the state you will be hunting? Eastern CO 4. Shotgun and pheasant load of choice? Beretta o/u...

At what point do you retire your dog?

I’d say hunt the dog until the dog doesn’t want to. And as others have said, hunt appropriate cover. I’ll add that I’ll try to pick a situation where success is more likely, for an older dog.

    Rogers toughman upland vest

Will a Gatorade bottle fit in the vest? I like to use Gatorade bottles because there’s no cap to fiddle with. Haven’t had leaking problems yet either…

    Best Dogs

I like the way Sage hunts with Lucas. I’d take a dog like that in a heartbeat.
