    Not that I'm counting

but 113 'til Opening Day, a day which should be a national holiday. And ironically, the 113 might be the temp today.

    Think it will fly?

So, if I go pheasant hunting and shoot a hen in this day an age, can I now say the hen was a transgendered rooster? Who am I to argue with the fact this hen identified with her inner rooster? For all I know, the hen should have been born a rooster. Think a game warden will let it go? (these...

    Just an FYI post

There are 284 days 'til Opening Weekend. My family thinks I have a problem.

    Thanks 2015-16!

All in all, I'd call it a success. We saw a lot of birds this season, finishing the year with 3 roosters and 6 quail. We had lots of wild flushing birds in the wind but got the ones for which we had shots. The highlight of the day was seeing one of the dogs finally remembering what to do...

Remington 870 won't pump after firing

Every so often, my 870 won't pump after firing. Am I shooting a shell which is expanding just enough to jam things? Anyone else have this happen?

    Let's talk late season strategy

Right now, it seems the pheasants are acting incredibly weird. We're seeing them in random, non-traditional places. We saw 8 roosters trotting along a hedge row bordered by green wheat on both sides. The moment we slowed down to watch what they were doing, they turned and skittered back down the...

    English Pointer afraid of pheasants

My buddy's father-in-law has an EP which seems to be afraid of pheasants. Is there a remedy for this? Any suggestions? From what I know, she was a rescue, but has the sweetest little personality, works close. I thought she seemed a little gun shy at times, but I'm not sure.

    Good luck!

To all of the guys taking to the fields tomorrow, good luck! May your shooting be true and days be fruitful. Stay safe!

Heads up for coming to KS this weekend

For those of you who are making a trek to our fair state this weekend, I just thought to give a heads up on traveling today. The State Troopers will be out in force so y'all may want to keep an eye on your speed. When I was going to Wichita State several years ago, in my short 35 minute...

    Why I hunt pheasants

It all started when I was 11 years old in the fall of 1988. My parents wouldn't allow me to take my Hunter's Safety course as a fifth grader, when you could take it without having a parent present. Not a big deal to me, I enrolled in the class during the fall in sixth grade and complete the...

Trying to get in shape for Opening Day

Once again, I made a commitment to myself. On my wall hangs a cutout of an article. The topic of the article is hunting healthy, serving as a reminder to upland bird hunters that not just dogs need exercise before Opening Day. Last year on Opening Day, I wore a pedometer for our half-day hunt...

    Lost dog, presumed stolen

One of my best friend's father-in-law's dogs has disappeared by Hillsboro. Unfortunately, he's beginning suspect Cap was stolen as when Cap has gotten out in the past, people in the area called the FIL or Cap would return shortly. Foul play is suspected because even Cap's body hasn't been...

    Season recap

Expectations were higher for the 2014-15 season than they had been in a few years. Those spring and summer rains gave us some hope for a better season. And it was a better season than we had in a few years in the south central/central part of the state. We added a retired coach and his son to...

Recommendations for GSP trainers in the state

Gang, It's looking more and more as if there may be a chance of a GSP puppy in my very near future. (With very good bloodlines from the mother and father) I'd like any insight to trainers around the area or the state or any advice in general, i.e, things I could work on with the dog etc...

    The Snow

I truly forgot how much fun it was hunting in a fresh snow like the one which blanketed our area. Even without the benefit of a dog, my father and I went out and about today. Unfortunately for him, he missed his opportunity for a rooster and I somehow managed to bag three. I can only imagine...

What's your worst experience in the WIHA?

I'm not talking about getting skunked either. I am a huge fan of the WIHA. The guys I've hunted with over the years and myself have always been a "first come, first serve" type of group where if we see someone in a WIHA, we'll go on to the next patch. After reading kb's wrap up from the...

    Heads up

Hey guys coming to Kansas this weekend, I just talked with a couple of my friends in the law enforcement community. Word is the highway patrol will be out in force on Friday on the major routes through Kansas. Watch out for the road construction zones and where the speed changes. Just a heads...

    More roosters?

So guys, lately, I've been seeing more roosters in ditches than I have in years past. Maybe I'm just optimistic, but I'm thinking maybe there is hope. Let it rain.

    Impressions of the 2013-14 season

Personally, I thought it was a good season even though the numbers were bad. Of course, the numbers in my neck of the woods were better than they have been the past two years. We did see pockets of birds and even managed to bag a few here and there. I think with the right weather conditions...
