My 2 year old isn't retrieving this season.lasr year he was pretty good.I wonder why?

I had this problem with one of my other labs 20 or 30 years ago, and I think I just tied wings to a retrieving dummy. He had an aversion to blood at times when he was young. He turned out to be a great bird dog. But yeah he did have some issues with picking up birds when he was young.

Last season he didn't retrieve to hand, but he would bring the bird to within 10 or 15 ft usually.

I just can't figure out why he isn't picking birds up this year. He's getting to the bird but then just standing there.

When I get to the vehicle, and set a bird on the ground, he picks it up and starts running around.

Can you get your cousin to help with training? Have him hide in the weeds and throw a dummy, then you call the dog back.

When he picks it up, briskly walk away…chances are he’ll grab the bird and follow…dealt with this earlier with a friend’s dog

Put a 15’ nylon check cord on so u can reel him in

Did your dog happen to ever get spurred by a rooster? Happened to my dog and for awhile, she was pretty timid to pick up another bird after that.

Yep that may have happened . This bird went down in the brush and he disappeared, and he didn't come out, he just stayed right there where that bird was.
