Blackhills Area?

Thinking about doing a rental for 1-2 months in the Black hills area for November/December, if possible. How is the bird hunting in that area? I have my own dog, and willing to walk and put in the effort. Just looking to see if it would be the worth the money. How much good public land is there within 1-2 hours of Deadwood/Lead area? What birds are up that way?

Not much in the way of pheasants up there
unless you can find some released birds
Around the aspens you might find a grouse or two
If you drive out into the prairie sharptails can be good

You probably couldn't find a worse place in South Dakota for bird hunting. Unless you want to drive 100+ miles east or north of the Deadwood/Lead area. Also, that time of year in that area you could have a fair amount of snow.

There are a few ruffed grouse in the aspen stands but that time of year there likely will be snow as well. You have to get out on the plains for sharptail and by November they are wilder than March hares. The sit on ridges and watch for you! A few pheasants north to the North Dakota border but as others have said, east river is a much better bet.

While turkey hunting in the Wyo Black Hills this past May, I saw what I swore were bobwhites fly across a road and land on a hill about 75 yards away from me... Looked at them thru binoculars. Do y'all have bobwhites that far north or was I seeing things?

Almost certainly Hungarian partridge if they were similar in size and behavior to quail. Bobwhites wouldn’t be that far north or west unless they were released by a preserve. Huns covey up in 10-20 birds per covey usually.
