Can’t you just downsize the type of hunt? The cover? The distance? The hours? I’ve taken to hunting “micro covers” the past few years…much fun! More productive by far! Easier on me and the dogs! Easier to recover the birds!

Not me,,,,, read post, See the Quotes (" ").........I hear other people say this .... Boo hoo !

Somewhere on here was a post about a guys 90 something year old neighbor that had his bird dog recently die.

When asked if he was getting another one “nah, it just hurts too much when they pass and I don’t think I could handle losing another one”.

Was thinking I was done a while ago. Last year couldn’t hit squat. So got new gun and glasses, practiced a bunch. This year could hit better, but the numbers sucked in my traditional range, I mean really sucked. However the last move to a new area got decent numbers and the dogs really did their job. Good for another year now and just contacted a breeder about another pup in a couple years. Nothing like 30 years ago but Medicare keeps buying me new parts so off I go.

I guess that was me 10 years ago. There were no "big" parcels available and it was driving to a place, gearing up, spending 10-30 minutes hunting and about that much time walking to the cover and back to the truck....then drive 5-10 minutes to the next one, repeat as needed until a limit was had or all the spots had been hunted. I agree with the easier recovery. But I would rather hunt the big parcel until a limit is had and head home, for me and the dog I think is easier and more enjoyable hunting than the multiple unloading, loading-up, driving to several places. Less walking and fewer fences, I see as big bonuses.
When this gets hard and hurts to do, it will be time to concentrate on other hobbies and projects.

I don’t hunt small covers for reasons attributable to pain issues, etc, but because they’re there…sometimes it’s a time issue…I’ve never considered it a hassle, or unproductive use of time driving, loading, unloading…most of my spots, public, private, etc are all within 10 miles…some of my small covers are “spots within spots”…a slough in the middle of a sea of grass, a dry creekbed that meanders, etc. But there are quite a few I or we drive to and hunt for 10 minutes or 15 minutes and kill lots of birds that way…a typical day of mine includes a variety of covers, spots, etc, especially if 4 hunters or more…solo, it’s often one spot…been a really good year #’s wise, most solo hunts have been around 40-50 minutes, some quicker, some longer…
