Iowa public opener

I don't know. All I can say is that I went up there once. Spent all day driving around and never found a place to hunt period. Wound up hunting some terrasses. Never saw a bird.

No birds in that state, keep moving. McFarmer can vouch about the lack of any pheasants in that territory.

Maybe if the weather is terrible, the "once or twice" guys will skip going out. Terrible would include freezing rain, heavy snow with or without 25 mph or higher wind.

If I go to Iowa on the opener in this area do you think I'll be able to find a spot at 8 or should I take a pass?
That is probably the hardest hit area of the state for hunters, with good reason. I have found it has higher amounts of public ground and higher bird counts, but also the most hunters being so close to the "great lakes" and all the hospitality. Plenty of our northern neighbors come visit too.
I think you could find a place where you'll be alone, but you might have to drive past 5-10 before you get it.

Serious question, why would you look for a spot to hunt, at 8:00 on opening morning on public land?

Two hours either side of 8:00 is when you can find a place to hunt on public land on opening day.

I coulda used better phrasing there, I didn't mean literally pulling up to a parking spot at 8. So you think you need to grab a spot by 6am?

For opening morning, I would say the latest you would want to be to any spot is 7am, I see tons of trucks driving around at 6am. The guys I hunt with don't worry about it as we drive down the night before, go grab some dinner at a small local place and then go to our spot and sleep there in our trucks. In IA it's legal to camp in the parking area of state public hunting areas. You could bring a camper or set up a tent if you wanted.

Remy, you are going to make me go up there again.
