What are some of your thoughts on 22 semi auto pistols? I'm looking for all around use carry and target. I'm leaning towards walther (my walther ppx is awesome!!) but they only have a 10 round clip.

My walther p22 is very picky on ammo and being clean.

It's a fun gun for plinking and it's easy to carry in a pocket but I'd look at something with a longer barrel like a Ruger or browning if your going to hunt with it or want decent accuracy farther away then across a loving room self defense.

If it's just shooting fun you want I don't think you can beat a ruger mark III or a browning buckmark. The target barrels are really accurate an fun to shoot. Smith and Wesson All so makes a really nice semi auto but I can't think of the name of it

I'm quite fond of my Ruger Mark III, but Browning's Buckmark is another fine choice.

I picked up a used Ruger SR22 at Gander Mountain and it's great. No jams and it's accurate for a small handgun. I own 3 other Rugers so obviously I like the brand.

Thanks great information...i've heard a lot of horror stories about picky guns that only shoot high end shells.

What they^ said.

I used to just dump bricks of various .22s in a container and grab handfuls as I went out plinking with the Buckmark. Mine is a little big for carry, but has taken anything I ever stuck in it and fired it well. Doubt that I have a dozen FTF over 20 years. Mine is the plain ole standard model.

Help me here. This post has me thinking of purchasing a small 22 handgun.

Which do you prefer and why: Ruger SR22 or Smith and Wesson M&P Compact?

There's nothing wrong with the SR 22; I'd buy that over the Smith.

Now for the "Heads-Up" for everyone: I'd strongly recommend avoiding Remington Thunderbolt ammo. An acquaintance stopped-by with a .22 handgun yesterday seeking help; he said the barrel looked "filthy." He shoots a lot & cleans his guns religiously, but upon inspection with my bore camera I discovered that grooves were horribly leaded-up, essentially rendering the barrel a smooth-bore & creating a potentially unsafe condition. He had used a steady diet of Thunderbolt because it has been the most readily available around here. After he soaked the bore with Kroil for a couple days & spent some time scrubbing the bore with a brass brush & copper fibers from an all-copper Chore Boy pad the bore is now lead-free, but it took a little work. subsequent research revealed that others have experienced the same heavy lead deposits while using Thunderbird; evidently the lead is quite soft. I don't ever use that ammo (more due to luck than prior knowledge), but I'll stick with the brands I do use.

I like my Keltec PMR 30. Light and big clip. It is a 22 Magnum though.

Few years ago I picked up the sig 1911 in 22lr. It's actually made by CSG I think,
but I enjoy shooting it very much. Too big for carry though.

22 pistol

I still haven't made my hand gun purchase yet. Life keeps getting in the way (auto, camper, home repairs and oh yes the BIG ONES kids:rolleyes:). I went to a gun range that has rental guns and did some try outs. The ruger sr22 is on the top of my list when it's time to spend the money on me.

Smith and Wesson Victory .22 lr

This spring I purchased the new Smith and Wesson Victory .22 pistol. It is very accruate and has a good trigger. Take down is one screw only! Also, a one screw change lets you remove the rear sight and install the included rail for scopes or dot sights. Stainless steel through out with a bull barrel at 5.5 inches. Very nice. Check it out on You Tube.

MG :D

I have had two High Standard 22 auto loaders and wish my dad had never got rid of his military model 107 Supermatic Trophy. The finest 22LR auto loading pistol ever made IMO.

Running a close second is the Browning Buck Mark. Very reliable and accurate.

I have a Ruger Mark II Stainless competition Target and a good accurate pistol it is. it's not as reliable as either the Buck Mark or the Supermatic Trophy. Disappointing, but still a close 3rd to the others.

The Colt Rail Gun I have is a great, accurate shooter that is not picky on ammo. It is actually made by Walther and wears a Colt brand. it is a .22 1911 style semi-auto. It has a 12 round mag. Not a small gun, rather like a full sized 1911 but terrific as a plinker. 3 white dot sights, drift adjustable. much easier to field strip than the Ruger, IMHO.

My brother went through this, it was between a browning or the ruger. He went with the ruger. I've shot it-it is incredibly accurate and I don't think it's ever jammed on him. He shoots quite abit. Good luck with your decision -that's half the fun anyway!:)
