Well a lot of farmers are cutting beans, corn, some startin on Milo just wondering if anyone have heard from a farmer or rancher or just anyone who has seen birds

My dad called me before his lunch break yesterday to report that he FINALLY SAW A ROOSTER (as in "A", singular, 1) IN PAWNEE COUNTY. No kidding folks, he said it's the only colored rooster he's seen since cutting wheat
Granted, he has been hauling hay bales lately on a flat-bed, so he's spent more time on the asphault than he normally would, BUT!
If you want birds in the bag this season, set up some dekes and enjoy some coffee in the blind

even hauling bales, he should have seen some...sounds really bleak in that area....used to kill a lot of birds out that way.

I have seen more quail in the beans and corn than the last few years. A friend of mine in west central Ks. said there were pheasants in spots in the milo. He saw more than last year. A lot of them don't have much if any color yet. There were a couple farms he said actually had quite a few. These were the same farms that had birds last year.

Good thing we have a good deer herd and turkey population:thumbsup: Looks like more deer hunting than birds again this year.

I see that you are located in McPherson, KS. My youngest daughter goes to college there at McPherson College. She is a freshman playing soccer.
Where were just out there earlier this month for parents weekend and homecoming.

So what im taking from all this is we have really late hatches. Thats not good at all. That snow we had in the spring screwed us.

What I am taking from this is that there was basically no hatch at all and very very few birds that have carried over from last year. We need to have a good hatch next year or it could get ugly.
Palco used to be a great area......wow....
Yeah it was but the drought has been more severe in that area the last 4-5 years. It seems they get missed by a lot of the big storms for some reason. Plus is there no irragation in the area. All the creeks and ponds are bone dry.
We hunted that area 20 days last year and only killed two birds and that was about all the good shots we had. The landowner we know may just not let anyone hunt this year, which I told him I dont blame him one bit. May not help but it cannot hurt.

Z- I am with you, I hope a lot of guys (landowners) just say no. some places it is just that dire.
Palco 4-5 years ago was good for quail and pheasant...yes, it has been that long, you are correct.

If you look on the extension biomass map for late August (the last one I have seen) it looks like the moisture happened in the counties 6, 7 and 8 (from the west) second row down from the north and then south for 4 to 5 rows of counties. That would mean (maybe) Osborne furthest to the west, Russell and east and south of there. That is where the vegetation is anyway. Any further west of Osborne is bleak looking.

All this really is do to many thing Drough, farmer and congress. Drought is the big factor ofcourse but the way farmer farm is way different than it was just 20-30 yrs ago. Congress is not working on a good Farm Bill they are stalling. Since CRAPTASTIC Obama hit office everything has hit the fan. Pheasants and conservation aren't top priorities in the government's eyes spending money on there own personal gain is. Sooner or later we won't be using the dollar cuz we are borrowing to much money. I see wild pheasants become preserve pheasant in the matter of years which sucks. Just look South Dakota they are letting go pheasants so people will come and spend money on hunting. Anyway thats my rant for the day.

few to no birds
three weeks ago as i was heading east to hunt woodcock, poor hunt, stopped to see my farmer friend in n. w. kansas, he saw few to no birds during his harvest and very few young turkey, the turkey was not that unusual but no pheasants was. tough hunt coming. driving across kansas, one route on the north and one on the south, if i were looking for a road kill pheasant i would have starved
