Im new to upland hunting, I hunt deer, turkey etc... Im looking at 2 breeds llewellyn or gsp I have 2 breeders in mind mountain view for llewellyns or crosswind for gsp has anyone ever hunted behind either of these breeders dogs. I will be hunting pheasant (stocked) grouse and quail I live in massachusettes. Also i know how far the llewelyns range, just watch hunting with hank, (same line) but how far do crosswinds gsp's range in comparison? I dont want a dog thats going to range out too far. I also want a dog that retrieves. Also I dont think you could compete in trials with mountain view dogs, because of the registry-not that competing is important to me, but someday you never know. Any info would be great thanx.:thumbsup:

I have hunted behind a GSP and a Brittany. I thought they were both knot-heads that I wouldn't have.

I bought a llewellin. Mine has HWH as a great-great grandpa . He is a cross between a Humphrey's dog and Blizzard Dancer. So, 50% humphreys. I looked to get the most for my money and I am very happy with him.

Remember that if you go with Mountain View your dog will be IDPBA. Oh, and the registrar's name is Marie Bloodgood.

I don't know a thing about llewellyn's, but as far as gsp's go, I would suggest looking for kennels that have NAVHDA or hunt test breedings. Those type of breedings usually focus on closer working foot hunting dogs and retrieving is very important. It sounds like those are the types of dogs you are looking for. Crosswind's produces some great dogs, but they "in general" are a bred to be a little higher geared and a little bigger running. They are extremely successful in NSTRA trails.

I have a buddy with a litter of very nice llewellyns on the ground. Ive hunted behind the sire, hes very nice. He has a few trial placements. The bitch is very stylish and nice as well. PM me if you want details. I understand they are very well bred and the price is reasonable.

I have 2 Llewellins, and I am very happy with them.
Here is some videos of them hunting this fall.
Indy the mostly white dog, was 18 months and Ace the Tri-color just turned 4.

Indy is a bigger runner and finds more coveys, but Ace is better on pheasants. (but Indy is still very young)
These are all wild birds

Thunderhead gsps would be a great dogs for what you are looking for. I just was at Ron and Deb's a few weeks ago having my female bred to Rowdy. They had a litter on the ground with Crystal and more coming up. Not sure what they had sold or spoken for.

Massman, you need to get out and see some dog flesh in action. You can read all the pedigrees and websites and take all the recommendations in the world, but until you actually get out and see first hand what you like, it won't do you much good.

Spring time usually means NAVHDA events or Hunt test season. Find one in your area and check it out. You'll meet a lot of people and see a lot of dogs of several breeds. Good luck.:)

I kinda have a problem with dogs so wild you have to put satellite dishes on them to control.l

I have more of a problem with dogs that can't out run their own shadow.....

Thanx tonys where did you get your llewellyn also what size is he how far ranging?

sorry it has been so long since I have been back. Let me answer your questions.

My dog came from Grouse Mountain Setters in KY. He is half humphrey's (out of Hank's Royal Flush-mentioned in a prominent breeder's comments section) and his dam is out of King's Blizzard Dancer.

He is about 60 lbs and will range as far as I let him. But he normally stays within 100 yds so that I will be there to shoot his bird. I have to hang onto his collar if we enter a field where he hears a gun going off as he wants that bird.

I have let him run as far as 1000 yards out but when he looks back unless he has a bird he will range back.

My pup also taught himself to circle running pheasants the first time he had that problem.
