My youngest son and I ventured out this morning for a quick hunt. We spent most of our field time discussing gun safety, among other things.
We encountered a skunk first. Fortunately the dogs had their "listening ears" on this AM and nobody got sprayed. We came across a squirrel when the dogs were in the truck. The boy missed with the first shot, reloaded and connected on the 2nd shot (head shot). The squirrel had just enough adrenaline to make it into a pile of huge rocks that daddy couldn't lift
We knew right where it was, but simply couldn't get to it. Now I have a good reason for a winch on the front of my truck
He wanted to eat that squirrel so he was ![Mad  ](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
Anyway, we finally encountered a covey of quail at the third little spot we tried. We agreed he wasn't going to shoot upon covey flush; that we'd hunt some singles for him to shoot at. After a great point w/ all dogs involved (pic below), the covey flushed onto private land. The landowner wasn't home so we settled for a new-fangled lunch at McDonald's (the happy meal helped ease the hunger pains and disappointment of losing his first official kill).
There are 3 dogs in both pics. If I ever get a male roan britt that's as small as Punk, I think I'll name him Waldo b/c it's pretty tough to find her in tall grass, live or in photos. The grass in this pic is barely knee high and not very thick.
The dogs are begging for more as I type. The lil' man asked if we could get up before the sun comes up tomorrow and try again.
I'll get a pic of the hunter if we get out tomorrow. Looking forward to hearing everyone's reports.
