Your Favorite Pheasant Shot

What is your most memorable shot on a pheasant? What are your favorite shots on pheasants? Passing left to right? Right to left? Straight away? Going away at an angle left or right?

Best Shot on a Pheasant was a Friend's

The best shot I ever saw was made by a friend who hunted just a few times in his life. We were a twosome hunting a small patch of walk-in CRP in a little snow without a dog. He was on the west edge and we were hunting it to the north. "I've got tracks in front of me," he said as we neared the north edge of the field. "He'll probably flush at the edge," I offered. A half minute later we reached the north edge where a barren, frozen field of green wheat began. Nothing. He tramped around in the grass as I looked on forty feet away. Nothing. He shrugged and we turned east to hunt out the north edge. He took about six steps and POW! --a big cock burst into a panicked high flush right out of the corner heading northwest. My buddy whirled around while shouldering his gun and dropped the big bird on his first shot 30 feet off the end of his barrel. It was a fabulous snap shot.

I made a shot a few years ago that will always stay with me. I was hunting with friends from Colorado here in South Dakota, and to keep from shooting more than my share and allow them more opportunities I was using my Savage 220A single shot 16 ga. choked IC with Federal 1 1/8 oz. loads in #6 shot. I was posting on the end of a long weed patch while the other guys walked towards me. As I'm kneeling down in the weeds and snow a lone rooster came sailing buy off to my left and just above the cover. I pulled up and followed him thinking he was out of range then I thought "what the heck" and pulled the trigger. He dropped like a rock and was dead when he hit the ground. As I started to walk over to him I thought, "wow, that was a long shot". So I went back to where I shot from and stepped it off. 72 yards! If I would have had any idea he was that far away I would never have taken the shot. But hey, a guy has to get lucky once in a while. :)

My favorite shot not best was on the first wild rooster I ever saw just two years ago. I was hunting all alone in a spot I had hunted about 5 times before and never seen a bird. I was about to call it quits when I heard a russeling in some tall grass on the edge of a dirt road. I walked around to push towards the road. After walking this small patch for about 10mins I chalked it up as a bunny running me in circles. I walked back to the road and smoked a cigarette, when I was done I took about two steps when a big rooster erupted from the very grass I was just in. He offered me a left to right pass shot at about 35yds. I proceeded to unload my grandfathers wingmaster at him never once ruffeling a feather. I could just see my grandpa looking down at me laughing with pride at his grandsons first encounter with a wise old ringneck. I will never forget that day and the sense of accomplishment of just seeing that rooster, I've been hooked ever since. I learned a lot about a pheasants nerves and nervousness that day and soon afterward bought my first hunting dog, who has brought me untold joy in the field and home.

Excellent story quail hound.

I guess my most memorable shot is probably a double that I got in my favorite CRP field behind my aunt's old house. Nothing special really, just one good shot over a nice point, then while I was running (yes, running) to get on top of the bird I marked, another bird flushed and I stopped my dead sprint, took aim and made another clean kill shot.

Disclaimer: I don't advocate running w/ a shotgun....I haven't done it for quite some time.

I shoot right handed so I prefer crossing shots from R to L. For some reason, I tend to miss pointed birds that fly straight away more often than I think I should.

most memorable but wrong!

My fav shot is left to right as im right handed im with you kb those birds are DEAD!Most memorable but illegal and i might add this was 20 years ago and would never do this again i was riding in the back of my dads truck and a rooster gets up it out of the ditch we are driving on it swings wide the same direction we are driving i promise at least 50 yards out so i tried the shot and he folds up and my friend and dad were like holy shit how did yoy hit that bird lol i said wow! hell i dnt know we azll laughed! Of course it wouldnt have been funny if the game warden was wathcing oh well like i said that was 20 years ago when i could actually hit something and was more awnry

A great story -- about a bird you missed, but how it counted in your life. Call it a "character-building" shot. Thanks for posting.

Same here.

That's some shootin' from a feller knows how to do it.

My most memorable shot is actually three shots on one flush. My two hunting buddies and I were in Iowa 2 years ago I had not shot a bird all day it was the last hunt of the day I put away my o/u and grabbed my 870. We were on public ground and heading back towards the truck when my buddies GWP locked on point, when I went to flush the bird three roosters broke and three shots later I had three birds on the ground. I will never forget that day and I don't think my buddies will either because they still talk about it. What a day!

Savor that one my friend. I've never shot a triple, nor have I even witnessed a triple. Great shooting!
