WY Sage Grouse Hunt

I just returned from a WY Sage Grouse hunt. I had a ball!! It was hot though (85 daily highs), so we limited our efforts for our dogs sakes to a morning hunt and a late evening hunt each day. Saw lots of pronghorn every day and it looked like the Sage Grouse numbers were up in the area that we were hunting. They are an interesting bird to hunt. You walk a long ways without seeing any birds and then it’s chaos for a second and then another long bird less walk. I need to get a better understanding of their habitat preferences, because it all looked the same to me.

Used to see a few in ND. ND had a one- or two-day season scheduled on a weekday(s). Population too low now.

Antelope hunting in WY. Stepped out of the truck one afternoon and we apparently parked in the middle of a flock of 15 - 20 birds. A couple of big males flushed and flew not more than 15 feet from us. Cool bird. I bet we saw close to 100 birds over 2.5 days.
 
I was pretty young - maybe 19 or 20. I spent a few hours running the property with the ranch owner's son. Every stock damn was full of ducks and geese. The son said a couple of the stock damns held 5# plus largemouth. Nice Mule deer and a few nice whitetails bucks seen. Wild turkeys ...
 
Yup, pretty sad! I told myself afterward that I didn't account for the slowness and shot over the top of the bird. Or I just missed.

Although I was concerned about snakes, I never saw any. The mornings started out in the mid 30's so perhaps they are already denned up???
