World Class Pointers or Setters

I have been intrigued by this topic for a while, from some of the blogs here. I have been a pointing dog owner for years, I am now trying what I think? is a nice Labrador. We have a bond. It's working. But I am an old dog, and I find myself reminissing about the special pointers I have seen. Sorry, continental breeds, no brittanies, shorthairs, Cesky Fouseks, are ineligbile. Pointers and Setters, (all coats) are eligible. I am seeking people who have the oldtime barrel chested male dog with range, spectacular nose, retrieving optional. You know this guy, he's a grand individual, fierce pride, and the one dog to put on the ground which always finds birds, period. If he's on the ground and comes back without a contact, there are no birds there. You can rely on that. Also his counterpart, a female, smaller, lighter, minces around primer cover to find dead birds or singles, almost always in easy gunshot range. The big boy finds the covey, and gets the thrills, this lady, ( always a lady), finds the money shot singles, and retrieves like a vacumn sweeper. I wonder does any body have these titans anymore? Or has seen one lately? Stories are appreciated, I wonder if anyone sees this these days. If you have one I am interested about dogs or pups. We all have dogs, most better than average, We like them, and they can do this thing occasionally, I am looking for the exceptional. The one that makes you stand up in the saddle to witness it. I had one, of 50+ dogs. Later, I saw a pointer derby find 12 bird contacts in an hour in front of a horseback shooting dog gallery, all other, 32 dogs none found more than 2. She found birds where there weren't birds. At least we can remember the old days, and the dogs that were there.

I hunted with a setter in Montana, that is something special.

We hunt a morning with him. We found 7 coveys of huns that morning, Teigen found all but one of them, with 3 or 4 other solid dogs down with him.

The last find of the morning was at 1200 yards, yes nearly a mile. Took us 20 minutes to get to him. The other dogs came in and backed, and we shot 2 huns out of the covey rise.

I have a setter now which I love. Just the right amount of range, good nose, loves to hunt. Best dog I have ever seen was a 9 month old eng pointer being hunted by a guide on the King Ranch in So. Tx. we shot at 25 coveys that day and she was on the ground about a third of the day with good dogs and probably pointed 10 of the coveys. last point of the day was on a covey that was sitting probably 30 yards away from her.

That is impressive! A 20 minute point? Amazing

I have my Vizsla clocked on a 47 minute point. We had just stopped to have lunch at the truck and someone watched him go on point about 150yds away. We decided to see how long that would last.

After lunch I was allowed to go and see if there was actually still a bird there -cock pheasant in small clump of cattails. No one still believes it to this day, even my hunting partners not so much that the dog held but that the bird did.

Of course I did not even take a gun. I figured it was a raccoon or possum or some such critter.

I have know doubt that you could have a dog stand a bird for 45 minutes.
V-John's Riley dog is very honest on his birds, and my Ace might as well.
