Working on wild birds

Who here runs their pups on wild birds in the off season?

What kind of set up do you use and why? (Check cord, e-collar, flank collar, etc.)

What types of handling do you do while running on wild birds?

Thanks!

I run my lab on wild birds starting the first of September. That is when we are allowed into public areas for training purposes here in South Dakota. I use an e-collar on her. Try to get out at least twice a week until the season starts in October. We work on her holding her points on birds as that is the area she usually has the most rust from the off season. Also try I try to focus on her staying once the bird flies so when the season comes she doesn't run after them. The things that it is hard to train for without birds to chase. As an added bonus I get some scouting in and some really cool pictures that I wouldn't normally get while actually hunting.

wild birds

I've been running my year old on wild birds for a month in a specified dog training area at a nearby state/county public hunting/fishing park. Birds she has been finding are mostly vey young, but still flying. I've always kept her on a long lead until now but am training and switching to an e collar now. There will be dove hunters (lots) in the area Tuesday but that dies off pretty fast and the'll be pretty much gone in a week.

She's learning quickly about wild birds, we find/point/flush 6-9 each time out.

Has that changed?? I thought it was only illegal to train on wild birds in SD from April 15th through July 31.

Yeah, I got the month wrong. I usually start the first of September. I worry about her catching young ones any sooner than that.

I do the same. The pooch in my avatr bumped into a brood a few years back (July). After that I stopped working my dogs until September 1. Plus bumping hens off nests isn't good.
