Windom Area Pheasants

I was on the phone with a friend last night talking pheasants and he was telling me that 6 of them harvested a quick 12 birds in a couple of hours pretty easily around the windom area on some private land. He reported seeing A LOT of pheasants that day.

Also, mentioned that he heads out to that area of the state since around the Mankato MN area public land gets hunted pretty hard. Said that when he heads out there and can usually get his limit fairly easy on public land with his 2 black labs.

I grew up in that area. Great hunting indeed! Man, I sure miss being able to drive 20 minutes from home and easily limit out before noon! Good times.

Any good spots around St. Cloud tOlzon? Is that where you primarily hunt?

I hunted over in Elysian, MN 2 weeks ago with a Minneapolis customer and he had 320 acres of private land. Pretty good stuff and a 25 acre pond as well that he stocks with fish.

I split time between public land near St. Cloud and private land near Marshall. I don't think I have to tell you where I have better luck :)

That being said, there are a few good spots within 30-40 miles of St. Cloud. Come up anytime!

Ha ha, I hear ya.

Sounds good. I'll join up you next year around the area. I'm looking to hunt more in MN, I just never get enough time. I'll bring the fast action camera and get some pics of your dog kicking up some birds.

With the recent weather were having I would bet there aren't too many hardy souls out there pushing the cattails for Phez. Maybe a few of the die hards, but I would suspect many of the WMA's have been fairly quiet recently. Lots of guys thinking ice fishing now.

Merry christmas, sounds like you don't live to far away from us there ,Tolzon, We will have to go hunting some time I live near Alexandria. The bird number is good here in southern MN we went down to Blue Earth for Christmas. I saw several birds near by picking. I am going indoor training later today, A friend of mine has a horse arena we can use. Then tomorrow head out and harvest a limit of roosters. It sounds like the weather is going to be good for a change.

I've hunted the WPA around there all year and ran into 1 (ONE) other group of 4 guys ONCE!!! I took a limit from those areas each time out, Acutally on one trip myself and a buddy hit one area and were done in 12 minutes!!!!! This was a personal best year for me and it was my pointing Labs first full year hunting!! The Windom area is awesome and it's just down the road. You SHOULD swing that way and check it out next year. Although I think it does get some pressure the first couple of weekends, but ,most of the crops are out in that area yet and the birds are in the corn. Late season is the best!!

If you guys hook up and find a day to pheasant hunt next year, I'll join you guys. I've got some good lenses on order and my Canon fires off quite a few fps

Web guy I think that sounds fun, And if you are up for a little training in the off season let me know. I would like some shots of Odie launching into the water. I have some birds here and the walleye fishing's not to bad either. Swellcat the hunting was well un believable.

you know speeking of windom area, I hunted several times on My way south to BE and I had allot of sucess around Butter Field Oden area. It seems to be a great area. I Basicly Just Go straight South from Alex to there and there is always Birds to hunt some where. Most People will let a guy go too or some nice little Co. road ditch walks are productive as well. It's quite fun when you are by yourself and the dog.

I would have had 2 in the bag if I had my gun drawn. I had my gun on my back with the sling and had the camera only. You have to commit one way or another. Good photos don't happen if you try and have the gun and camera.

In this photo, the guy shooting is from Mankato, MN. Unfortunately he missed and the rooster came close to me. This is with my cheapo lens as well. I was way at the end of the field, so it wasn't the best:

Here's another of Trent shooting... he missed as well!

Trent must have been a little irritated after missing the one on that second picture. They don't come much more straightforward than that...:D

We've all been there though....

He was twice as irritated because I wouldn't let him hear the end of it. Hey... I've missed those straight away's too.

I agree that the pressure is high in the Mankato area and takes a while west to get better.

I hunt in an area from St James to Amboy and the pressure has never been greater in my life that it has been the last 2 years. If I wasn't from the area it wouldn't be the first spot on the map I would pick to try my luck. Fortunately I have a few relatives and farmers who have small areas that contain a few birds. The farther west you get the better.
