Ok, for the past 5 years my older brother has been trying to get me to join him on his fall Pennsylvania Deer/turkey hunt. He and a couple of friends back home have a cabin just about 6 miles north of the town of Clarence. He's never been much of an upland bird hunter but he says he always sees grouse in the woods and has on occasion seen pheasants but being that he's never really looking for either, he hasn't been able to be much help when I ask him about numbers. Thing is, since I've gotten into bird hunting, my deer hunting desire has really taken a hit and I'd be much more eager about making this trip if I knew I had a good chance of getting into some birds.
I'm not looking for anyones honey hole, I'm just basically wanting to know from anyone familiar with that area, if it would be worth my while to bring my dog and try my luck with the shotgun on the days I'm just not feeling like sitting in a stand all day with my bow. He had mentioned something about pheasant releases that some locals told him about a few years back but again since it's not really his thing, he didn't remember much about the program.
I'm originally from NC and while I usually make it home at least once a year to hunt deer, I've been living and hunting the plains and prairies of Oklahoma for most of the past 15 years. I've never once stepped foot in Pennsylvania - his connection to the area is a good friend who moved south about 20 years ago but has maintained his annual Penn hunting camp traditions. The only thing he's told me is that the woods are big with clear bottoms and knowing me the way he does, i'll love being back in the hardwoods and away from the wind swept prairies I've had to adjust to since being out here.
Thanks in advance for any advice or possible links that could better prepare me for what i'll find in that area.
Forgot to mention - i'll be there the 2nd week of November.
