December 31, 2012, I drove down from the house, stopped by the mail box, and there was a rooster pheasant, just poking around. Looked young.
Two days later, where the neighbor had pulled some stacks up, there were 5-6 hens and 3-4 roosters, digging around in the ground where the stacks had been.
All looked thin, or young, and it took a while before they flushed up, not 15 feet from the car. Mick was going nuts in the back of the car.
Haven't seen that many birds all season long, and they all looked young. There's only been one rooster cackling all Fall. Have no idea where they came from, and it is NOT pheasant cover.
I'm going to put out occasional sacks of wild bird seed, up on the hillside where the wild cherry trees have taken over. Should give them some protection while eating, if they find it before the rodents and small birds find it.
Didn't hunt on the 31st, just marveled to see the rooster. Like a New Year's gift.
Maybe there's hope. The 12 inches of snow is melting now, and it is supposed to get up to 40 degrees, before it gets cold again. I'll put the feed out when the weather changes back to cold.
