Whose quail?

Crossing shot

You didn't know another group was hunting this parcel. The two groups have seen each other and have safely altered course. A huge covey gets up from your dog's point and flies in front of the other group.

Who hunts these singles?

If it's public, why not everyone?

I would say theirs. You both chose your route, you had your chance with the birds and now the birds are in their portion of the tract. In a perfect world, you would have taken 1-2 out of the covey rise and were going to leave them alone anyway. My 2 cents.

This happens all the time on put and take pheasant hunts. If my dog points a pheasant and it is missed and flies over in front of another group, I leave it alone. Many times if the other group sees that my dog pointed the bird they will motion me over for a follow up. If they don't that is ok, I had my chance. Myself and any one in my group understands that if a bird is pointed by another group it is their bird as long as they want to chase it.
