Who's daughter deer hunts?

My daughter who is now a sophomore in college has been wanting to go shoot a deer for several years now. She goes bird hunting with me and she has been turkey hunting as well.

Earlier in the week I decided that I need to take her deer hunting before time gets away from us. Problem was I didn't have a rifle I thought she could handle. My rifle I used to deer hunt with is a Browning 7MM Mag BDL. Maybe too much gun for her but today I thought I would let her see if she could handle the recoil.

Now, she has shot quite a bit, shotguns, handguns, and my AR. Lined her up with the 7MM and she got to rocking on that thing and didn't want to stop! Finally almost ran out of ammo before she said she needed to go to her boyfriends. LOL.

Guess we will try the anterless season in Jan. She is hell bent on shooting a deer. I suppose she could be up to worse things.........

daughters

while i am over the age, at one time both of my daughters hunted while in high school and after that, it ended, mostly i think it is the areas they now live in and the fact they never found a boy friend that cared about it. it was also difficult for them as girls to talk about it, the boys didn't want anything to do with them and the girls would have rather gone shopping. one took a goat in colorado when she was 14, the youngest ever, and followed that up with an antelope in wyo. the other one took two nice mule deer in colorado and then tried but no luck hunting whitetail in vermont. she then went off to college and took a major in golf and a minor in shooting pool. oh well!!

cheers

That's great! I hope she gets one.

My daughter is 8, and has tagged along on some hunts since she was probably 4. I still remember buying her a BB gun for Christmas when she was 5, and her being pissed when she found out she couldn't shoot her own turkey with it...

Just out of curiosity, what caliber were you thinking about getting? My wife likes to shoot some, so I was thinking about getting a smaller rifle at some point. My neighbor recommended a 25.06 or a 257 roberts... but that's as far as it's gone.

.243!!! Got into deer hunting about 5 years ago and shot a .270 for 2 years. Traded it in for a .243 so my 8 year old daughter can shoot it once she's a little older and I love the thing. I've put down 5 deer in the past 2 years with it and quite a few coyotes. It's a savage and a sweet little gun. My daughter sounds much like yours. She loves tagging along as well and is already asking when she'll be old enough to pheasant hunt. Planted some birds last year and let her come along and she loved it, but haven't tried the wildbird thing with her yet.

remington is coming out with a new 700 chambered in 6.8 spc. will be perfect for beginners and something that dad can use as well!

don't get her a 25-06, they are over kill at both ends. load and they kick. i and my daughter's used the 257 roberts and i have used it for just about everything including some 20 plus bull elk. a 243 is close.

cheers

My daughter shoots a .260 quite well and is 12. We have been close to taking an animal but have yet to pull the trigger on one! Still have till the end of January for elk and hope they migrate 6 more miles.

Mine is going to shoot the 7MM Mag for the anterless season. And if she digs shooting deer then I'll get her a 25'06 or a 7mm'08 for her birthday next summer. I've put a few rounds down range with the 25'06 and it's a darn nice little rifle.

She didn't have an ounce of issue shooting the magnum rifle though. She is 5'8 and weighs about 130lbs. It rocked her some but nothing she couldn't deal with. But that rifle is heavy as well.

Girl's first Buck!

My God daughter shot her first buck last Saturday evening with a .243 at 90 yards. It was her 1st hunt for anything and she is 17 and going off to college next fall. She is thrilled and hooked now. Said she is coming home next fall to hunt for a bigger buck.

Kick'em Up!

My oldest daughter shot her first buck at the age of 12. She shot an eight pointer. Then on 11-11-11 she shot an 11 point buck! She thought last year she would wait for a bigger deer! That one never materialized so she ate her tag. This year she shot a doe on the last weekend, but probably let 20 different bucks walk this year because they were all too small. She has shot ever deer with a 12 guage slug! They kick like a mule and she is a little thing. It is all in the way you teach them how to shoot. Recoil in the deer stand is non-existent. Some of my best memories have come from sitting in the deer stand with my daughter and watching her get excited about shooting any size or sex deer.

My girl used to tag along and shot a few deer with her Browning bar .243. Now a freshman in collage 3 months pregnant she is wishing she still deer hunted instead of chasing boyfriends.
