Who has lost or found a shotgun while hunting? My first shot gun a jc penny .410 was found in the road ditch in front of my grandparents farm place. I've never found one but would probably sit there for awhile to see if anyone came looking for it.

I found a Browning over/under in the ditch while quail hunting a couple years ago. I called the sheriff when I got home and gave vague details and my number if anyone called looking. It took about a week but an older gentleman called and that gun had been a wedding anniversary present to him from his kids. He had leaned it against the truck while loading his dog. The road grader passed as I was hunting and I wondered if that old man would have gotten that gun back if I hadn't found it first. Figured the hunting gods owed me a close flush or 2 for that one

I'd call it in too. Karma gives me anxiety lol

I thought you meant a bird....Yesterday I had 4 birds in my vests 1 which was still alive. As I was driving down the road I pulled the bird out and gave him the squeeze. Put him back in my vest. Got to where we going to clean the birds walked inside and only had 3 birds in my vest. Went back to vehicle and #4 was in between the seat and center console. How i don't know.

The most famous incident of this would have to be “Bo Whoop” owned by the De Shootinest Gent’men. Great writer, hunter, and gun. Enjoy

My dad had a co-worker that hunted in Iowa, the guy was somewhat of a jerk. During a hunt he killed 2 birds in the morning and dropped them off in his suv at lunch, he hunted the afternoon and killed his third. When he returned to his suv he only could find one bird from the morning, after an extensive search of the vehicle he gave up. He hopped in the front seat and started the suv. He turn the fan up on the heater and feathers blew out of the vents......The rooster founds it way up into his dash, he had to take his suv to the dealer to get the bird out! Imagine explaining that to the dealership......I figured it was karma for how he treated people......

I found a Browning Citori laying off a gravel road a few years ago. I drove to the nearest authority and told them and by that time, the police were already notified of the hunters loss. He was notified I had it and he called me to set up a meet. The gentleman had laid it on top of a dog box and got into the truck, forgetting he left it there at the time. (The second time I've heard of that happening..!)

I met the man and only asked for the serial # and he had it. He was happy to get his shotgun back, as I would have been too.

It's funny as I see him every once in a while in the same area. All's well that ends well...

Not a shotgun but I had a pheasant get out of the back of my pickup while we were eating lunch. We went to my mother in laws to clean the birds and one was missing. I went back to the parking lot and there it laid.
I also lost a Garmin Astro 430. It was almost dark when we got back to the pickup and I set the Garmin on the box side rail while I watered and loaded the dogs. It was dark when we left and I forgot it was on the box side rail. When I got to the hotel I couldn't find it. The next day I drove back over and looked but it was gone.
Three years later we were hunting in that same area and an older gentleman sat on the road waiting for us to finish the field. He asked if anyone had ever lost anything in that area and I told him that I had lost a GPS several years ago with an orange protective cover on it. He opened his pickup and handed me my lost Astro. He said he had found it early the next morning and had put an add in the paper but no one could identify it. He had seen us hunting that day and remembered the dog box in the back of my pickup and that's why he stopped to ask. I had already written it off but was still happy to get it back!

That's wild. Good guy.

Thought I did once. Was at a public hunting parking lot in spring and something caught my eye off to the side of the parking lot maybe 30 feet, was some trees and i could see a gun barrel rested against one of the trees. I pushed my way in there and it was a BB gun

Two springs ago, after a morning of turkey hunting, I placed my Benelli Supervova on the tail gate when I was done. I started loading some other items in the cab, hopped in, and drove away.

Apparently the shotgun stayed there for a couple miles as I was driving on a gravel road. Once I reached the highway, and hit the pedal, it fell off on the road.

Once I got home, I realized what I had done when I saw the tail gate open. My heart sank. Its a nice shotgun, well maintained, about 10 years old, in camo edition. But my overwhelming thought was "oh crap, what if someone finds it and it gets used in a crime?" I wondered if I could be held liable for something serious.

I immediately drove back to the hunting location, back tracked my driving steps, and could not find it. Then I called the county sheriffs office. They said someone turned in a shotgun about an hour ago and it was at the station. I spoke with the deputy on duty 30 minutes later and once he verified I was the owner, he gave it to me. It has a bit of road rash but otherwise was undamaged. I had a gunsmith look it over, as I thought the barrel was bent. It was not.

I found out from the deputy who had turned it in. It was an off duty EMT. He drove past it at high speed, and walked back to pick it up, then turn it in. I was able to speak with him on the phone about it. He said he was a hunter himself so he could understand the situation I was in, and was glad the gun was still functional. He wished me luck turkey hunting too, and the next morning I plowed a nice tom turkey with it.

There are good, high moraled, thoughtful individuals still out there and I enountered one of them in the spring of 2023.
