Two springs ago, after a morning of turkey hunting, I placed my Benelli Supervova on the tail gate when I was done. I started loading some other items in the cab, hopped in, and drove away.
Apparently the shotgun stayed there for a couple miles as I was driving on a gravel road. Once I reached the highway, and hit the pedal, it fell off on the road.
Once I got home, I realized what I had done when I saw the tail gate open. My heart sank. Its a nice shotgun, well maintained, about 10 years old, in camo edition. But my overwhelming thought was "oh crap, what if someone finds it and it gets used in a crime?" I wondered if I could be held liable for something serious.
I immediately drove back to the hunting location, back tracked my driving steps, and could not find it. Then I called the county sheriffs office. They said someone turned in a shotgun about an hour ago and it was at the station. I spoke with the deputy on duty 30 minutes later and once he verified I was the owner, he gave it to me. It has a bit of road rash but otherwise was undamaged. I had a gunsmith look it over, as I thought the barrel was bent. It was not.
I found out from the deputy who had turned it in. It was an off duty EMT. He drove past it at high speed, and walked back to pick it up, then turn it in. I was able to speak with him on the phone about it. He said he was a hunter himself so he could understand the situation I was in, and was glad the gun was still functional. He wished me luck turkey hunting too, and the next morning I plowed a nice tom turkey with it.
There are good, high moraled, thoughtful individuals still out there and I enountered one of them in the spring of 2023.
